W&L Women's Tennis Captures Doubles Title at ITA Tourney

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team captured one doubles title and has another pair in contention for a title as it participated in the second day of the ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships on Sunday at the University of Mary Washington.

In the Blue 3 Doubles Flight, sophomores Jen Hall (Metairie, La./Metairie Park Country Day School) and Laura Simmons (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) advanced to the finals by defeating the Bridgewater College duo of Ally McConaughy and Emily Schweitzer, 8-4. They then defeated Grove City College's Christina Bedi and Katie Brown, 8-2, to claim the flight championship.

The tandem of juniors Lauren Lukas (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) and Trelsie Sadler (Wakefield, R.I./Groton School) advanced to the finals of the Championship Doubles Flight with an 8-5 win over Farah Leclercq and Ariel Lewis from Oberlin College, while topping Carnegie Mellon's Laura Chen and Courtney Chin, 8-6. They will face Johns Hopkins' Abby Clark and Candace Wu tomorrow at 8:00 am in the finals of the flight.

In other doubles action, sophomore Sallie Griffin (Warrenton, Va./Highland School) teamed with first-year Chelsea Mixson (Beaufort, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) to defeat Jillian Poppe and Angela Tenaglia from Salisbury University, 8-5. They then fell to Johns Hopkins' Clark and Wu in the semifinal round, 8-5.

Four Generals also advanced to the Round of 16 in the Women's Championship Singles Flight before falling to their opponents. Lukas fell to Carnegie Mellon's Laura Chen, 6-3, 6-4, while Griffin was defeated by Washington College's Amanda Bercovici, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Senior Catherine Reed (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) fell in the round of 16 to JHU's Clark, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, and Sadler dropped her match to Hopkins' Carolyn Warren, 6-4, 6-3.
