W&L Women's Tennis Sweeps ODAC Fall Tournament
ROANOKE, Va. – The Washington and Lee women’s tennis
team claimed titles in 12 flights en route to sweeping the ODAC
Women’s Tennis Championship this weekend at Hollins
University.
In Flight A singles, senior Blair Brzeski (Westlake Village,
Calif./Agoura) defeated Lynchburg’s Elisabeth Eckert, 6-0,
6-0, Emory & Henry’s Jill Williams 6-0, 6-0 and
Roanoke’s Laura Dodson 6-1, 6-0 to claim the title.
Sophomore Ellen Yeatman (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central)
claimed the title in the Flight B singles with victories over Emory
& Henry’s Jess Williams, 6-0, 6-0, Roanoke’s Corbin
Leitch, 6-0, 6-0 and Sweet Briar’s Moriah Burke, 6-0,
6-1.
The Flight C Singles featured first-year Sallie Griffin
(Warrenton, Va./Highland School) claiming the title, topping
Lynchburg’s Krysten Bishop, 6-0, 6-0, Guilford’s Liz
Killion, 6-0, 6-0 and Hollins’ Sarah Budrus, 6-2, 6-2, in the
finals.
First-year Christina Douglas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble
Hill) took the Flight D singles, defeating Sweet Briar’s
Leslie Polaski, 6-0, 6-0, Roanoke’s Caroline Hunter, 6-0,
6-0, and Hollins’ Anne Ailstock, 6-0, 6-0.
In Flight E singles, first-year Kerry Cotter (Easley, S.C./Wren)
took wins over Roanoke’s Haley Parker, 6-0, 6-0, Sweet
Briar’s Glory Bowman, 6-0, 6-0 and Hollins’ Taylor
Reedy, 6-1, 6-1 to take the title.
First-year Laura Simmons (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) was victorious
in the Flight F singles, defeating Guilford’s Jackie
Goldberg, 6-0, 6-1, Sweet Briar’s Sarah Manter, 6-0, 6-1, and
Hollins’ Finley Vinson, 6-1, 6-0, in the finals.
First-year Elise Hansen (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) was
also victorious for the Generals, topping Hollins’ Sommer
Quantz, 6-1, 6-0, Sweet Briar’s Ebie Baker, 6-2, 6-1, and
Sweet Briar’s Ellen Reid in the finals, 6-2, 7-5.
In the final singles bracket, first-year Jen Hall (Metairie,
La./Metairie Park Country Day School) took the title, recording a
walkover win in the quarterfinal round, defeating Sweet
Briar’s Ann Roach, 6-0, 6-0, in the semis and winning the
bracket by default after her opponent withdrew with an injury.
The Generals also claimed all four doubles flights in their sweep
of the tournament.
Flight A doubles featured Brzeski and Yeatman, claiming the title
with wins over Lynchburg’s Bishop and Eckert in the
quarterfinals, Roanoke’s Dodson and Leitch, 8-2, in the semis
and Sweet Briar’s Virginia Edahl and Burke in the finals,
8-0.
Griffin and Douglas paired together in the Flight B doubles,
winning the flight over Hollins, 8-2.
In Flight C doubles, Cotter and Simmons won the flight, defeating
Guilford’s Morgan Howard and Goldberg, 8-0, Lynchburg’s
Gretel Coleman and Sarah Fleming, 8-0, and Hollins’ Katie
Dotson and Vinson, 8-0.
The final doubles bracket featured Hall and Hansen in Flight D
defeating Sweet Briar’s Baker and Bowman in the semis and
Randolph’s Porshe Pugh and Shantel Rivera, 8-2 in the finals.
