W&L Women's Tennis Advances Eight at ITA Regional
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women’s
tennis team advanced eight players and two doubles squads to the
next round in the first day of the Wilson ITA Southeast Regional
Women’s Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Mary
Washington on Saturday.
In the Champion singles flight, W&L advanced three players in
the main draw competition tomorrow. Sophomores Jen Snyder (Highland
Heights, Ohio/G
ilmour Academy), Ellen Yeatman (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock
Central) and senior Blair Brzeski (Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura)
all claimed their two first-day matches to continue play. Snyder
defeated Wilkes University’s Xiaogiao Zhang, 6-3, 6-0, and
Salisbury University’s Melissa Follett 6-1, 6-1 to advance
and face Johns Hopkins’ Carolyn Warren tomorrow. Yeatmman
defeated Hollins University’s Shawnte Woodson, 6-0, 6-0 and
took down Randolph-Macon’s Lucy Schermerhorn in three sets,
4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to advance and face Johns Hopkins’ Nandita
Krishnan. Brezski defeated Washington College’s Kat Cohen,
6-1, 6-0 and Meredith College’s Kathryn Maples, 6-3, 6-1 and
will face Wilkes University’s Melanie Nolt.
In doubles action, the Generals advanced two of four squads in the
Champion doubles flight main draw. Sadler and Yeatman defeated
DeSales University’s Christine Petrilla and Kate Steiner,
8-1, while Dickinson and Lucas defeated Washington College’s
Kat Cohen and Kristine Depew, 8-0, to advance.
In the Blue 1 singles draw, first-year Sallie Griffin (Warrenton,
Va./Highland School) advanced after defeating Swarthmore
College’s Dina Zingaro, 6-0, 6-0.
The Blue 2 singles draw featured two W&L first-year players.
Laura Simmons (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) defeated Guilford
College’s Mary Simpson, 6-3, 6-0, and then went on to take
down Haverford College’s Fumiko Shogase, 6-1, 6-1. Christina
Douglas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) also advanced to
Sunday play, defeating Elizabethtown College’s Alena Marani,
6-0, 6-1 and Johns Hopkin’s Candace Wu, 6-4, 5-7, 10-4.
The Generals return to action tomorrow for day two of the Wilson
ITA Southeast Regional.
