W&L Tennis Claims Four Championships at Fall Festival
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women’s
tennis team claimed the championship in two of the four singles
flights and both of the doubles flights as it hosted the W&L
Fall Festival at the W&L Courts over the weekend.
At the Flight B singles bracket, junior Catherine Reed (St. Louis,
Mo./MICDS) defeated first-year teammate Christina Douglas
(Fayetteville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill), 6-3, 6-1 to claim the
championship.
The singles D flight also featured an all W&L matchup in the
finale. First-year Kerry Cotter (Easley, S.C./Wren) defeated junior
teammate Crystal Spencer (Huntsville, Texas/Huntsville) in the
championship with a score of 6-3, 6-1.
At the Flight A singles bracket, senior Blair Brzeski (Westlake
Village, Calif./Agoura) went 2-1 for the tournament. Brzeski
advanced to the finals but fell to Mary Washington’s Katie
Schafer by a score of 6-0, 6-1.
At the Flight C singles bracket, Lyndsey Johansson (London,
England/American Community School Cobham) fell to Mary
Washington’s Cassie Bowman, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4 in the
final.
In the doubles Flight A bracket, Reed and sophomore teammate Ann
Morris (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) went 3-0 to claim the
championship. They defeated the team of Brzeski and Ashley
Leinweber (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) in their
first match, 8-1, Mary Washington’s duo of Courtney Goimarac
and Katie Schafer 8-6 in the second match and finally topped
teammates sophomore Jen Snyder (Highland Heights/Ohio/Gilmour
Academy) and first-year Sallie Griffin (Warrenton, Va./Highland
School), 8-5 to claim the championship.
W&L also claimed the doubles Flight B bracket, with Cotter and
first-year Laura Simmons (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) defeating
Hollins’ Ziray David and Caitlyn Hoerr 8-0 in the first
match, Mary Washington’s Bowman and Casey Malcolm 9-7 in the
second match and Mary Washington’s Danielle Velardi and
Rachel Covington, 9-7 for the championship.
The Generals will return to action Sept. 26-28 as they participate
in the ITA Atlantic South Regional hosted by Mary Washington.
