W&L Women's Tennis Hosts Fall Festival
LEXINGTON, Va. –The Washington and Lee
women’s tennis team opened its 2009-10 campaign by hosting
the W&L Fall Festival at the W&L Courts on Saturday.
In flight A, senior Blair Brzeski (Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura)
opened the competition with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hollins’
Shawnte Woodson. She then won her second match over Mary
Washington’s Courtney Goimarac in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2,
to set up Sunday’s championship appearance against Mary and
Washington’s Katie Schafer.
In flight B, first-year Christina Douglas (Fayetteville,
N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) also advanced to a Sunday championship,
winning her first match over Mary Washington’s Michelle
Meadows 6-2, 6-3, and knocking off junior teammate Virginia
Dickinson (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary’s Episcopal) to advance to
the finals. Douglas will face junior teammate Catherine Reed (St.
Louis, Mo./MICDS) who advanced to the championship by winning her
first match over Mary Washington’s Casey Malcolm 6-2, 6-0 and
second match over Mary Washington’s Jocelyn Lewis 6-5,
6-1.
In the D flight, junior Crystal Spencer (Huntsville,
Texas/Huntsville) advanced to the championship by winning her first
match over Hollins’ Anne Ailstock 6-2, 6-0 and then defeating
senior teammate Lauren Dorsey (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) in
three sets, 7-6, 3-6, 10-8. She will face first-year teammate Kerry
Cotter (Easley, S.C./Wren) in the finals. Cotter won both of her
matches to advance, defeating Mary Washington’s Rachel
Covington in the first match 6-2, 6-3 and senior teammate Katie
Harris (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine’s) 6-0, 6-4.
Final day action continues on Sunday from the Washington and Lee
tennis courts.
