GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team recorded 953 points over three days of competition to claim the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday at the Greensboro Aquatics Center.
The title is the program's seventh consecutive and 24th overall. Sophomore Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) was also chosen as the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year to mark the sixth General to win that award.
Emory & Henry finished the three-day competition with 585 points to finish in second and Randolph-Macon 481 points for third. Sweet Briar (349), Bridgewater (273), Greensboro (255), Notre Dame of Maryland (154), Hollins (113) and Guilford (98) wrapped up the team results.
Senior Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) and first-year Elisabeth Holmes (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) each claimed an individual win on the day. Hardy swam in the 100 free in 52.95 for first place, while Holmes clocked in at 17:50.36 in the 1650 free to take the top spot.
In the 200 back, five Generals placed in the top eight. Foster was runner-up in the event, timing in at 2:07.38. First-year Emily Rollo (Haddonfield, N.J. / Haddonfield Memorial) finished third in 2:08.79, junior Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) took fourth in 2:10.17, first-year Abigail Sterns (Brussels, Belgium / Orcutt Academy - Brussels American School) placed seventh in 2:11.71 and first-year Rachel Baker (Winston Salem, N.C. / Forsyth Country Day) rounded out the pack with a time of 2:12.24 for eighth place.
First-year Jillian Leigh (Old Greenwich, Conn. / Greenwich) led a pack of three Generals in the 200 breast, touching the wall in 2:29.10 for second place. In third place was sophomore Emma Swabb (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) with time of 2.30.21, while junior Mary Gabe (Mequon, Wis. / Homestead) was fourth in 2:35.13.
Senior Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md./Saint Paul's) finished in second place (2:10.25) in the 200 fly, while first-year Haylee Rademann (Folsom, Calif. / St. Francis) took fourth (2:11.46). Sophomore Meredith Murphy (Hillsboro, Calif. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) clocked in at 2:14.47 to take fourth place.
The 400 free relay featuring Hardy and first-years Natalie Brendsel (Oakton, Va. / Flint Hill), Holmes and Rollo came in at 3:34.15 to claim second place.
With the conclusion of this meet, W&L has finished its season.
