W&L Women's Swimming Picks Up a 161-101 Win in Season Opener
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's swimming team opened its 2013-14 campaign with a 161-101 victory over Centre College on Saturday afternoon at Cy Twombly Pool.
The Generals won eight of the 14 events on the day, and were led by first-year Elisabeth Holmes (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) who finished the day with three individual wins and was part of the 400 free relay squad that finished second. Holmes finished in the top spot in the 200 free (1:58.54), 500 free (5:16.83) and the 200 IM (2:14.44).
Other first-place finishers were senior Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mill, Md./Saint Paul's) in the 100 fly (1:01.79), sophomore Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) in the 100 back (1:01.80) and first-years Natalie Brendsel (Oakton, Va./Flint Hill) in the 200 free (56.70) and Emily Rollo (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) in the 200 back (2:14.76).
In the 1000 free, three Generals placed in the Top 5, with junior Sydney Gay (Henrico, Va./Henrico) leading the way in second in a time of 11:35.70. Sophomore Lizz Platt (DuBois, Pa./Dubois Area) finished in fourth place (11:43.98) and sophomore Lindsey Gilbert (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) was fifth (11:53.11).
Rollo had a successful day with one first-place finish and two second place finishes in the 100 back (1:02.26) and the 200 IM (2:14.44).
In the 200 medley relay, Emma Swabb (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio/Elyria Catholic), Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) and Foster teamed up to take first place, touching in at 1:52.88. The 400 free relay placed second with a time of 3:41.72, featuring Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive), Schaffer, Brendsel and Holmes.
The Generals return to the pool on Friday, when they travel to Mary Washington. The meet is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
