GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team set four more school records to stay in first place with 653 points after competition on day two at the ODAC Championships on Saturday.
Randolph-Macon sits in second place with 356 points after the second day of competition, while Bridgewater is third with 283 points. Emory & Henry (277), Greensboro (170), Sweet Briar (161), Notre Dame of Maryland (161), Hollins (108) and Guilford (58) wrap up the team results.
The 200 medley relay featuring senior Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School), sophomore Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio/Elyria Catholic), and first-years Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) and Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) timed in at 1:48.11 to claim first place and set new ODAC, meet and school records in the event. Hamp also broke the school and championship meet records in the 100 fly, timing in at 58.52. First-year Emma Swabb (Erie, Pa./McDowell) smashed the 400 IM school record, clocking in at a record time of 4:40.25 for first place and junior Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) eclipsed a new school record of 1:55.73 in the 200 free to win the event.
Four more Generals placed in the top eight in the 200 free behind Hardy, including a runner-up performance of 1:57.12 by senior Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and a third-place showing by Schaffer (1:57.45). First-year Grace Duncan (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) clocked in at 2:00.94 for seventh and first-year Liz Platt (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Area) rounded out the pack at 2:01.21 for eighth place.
In the 400 IM, junior Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md./Saint Paul's) finished second, touching the wall in 4:41.17, while sophomore Hannah Melkun (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) was third in 4:42.17 and senior Colleen Moore (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) notched a fifth-place finish in 4:49.82.
Foster and Melkun each recorded individual first-place times on the night. Melkun won the 100 breast in a time of 1:07.84 and Foster claimed the top spot in the 100 back, clocking in at 1:00.26. The final winning performance came from the 800 free relay, consisting of Hardy, Kasoff, Schaffer and Rolfe, who finished in at 7:52.87.
Other top times included a second-place finish my first-year Meredith Murphy (Hillsboro, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Prep) in the 100 fly (1:00.15), senior Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) coming in at 1:00.60 for fifth in the same event, Brassfield registering a 1:02.30 in the 100 back to claim third and sophomore Mary Gabe (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) touching in 1:11.32 for fourth place in the 100 breast.
W&L returns to the pool on Sunday for the final day of competition at the ODAC Championships. Preliminary heats are set to begin at 10:00 am.
