LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team claimed nine event wins in defeating Virginia Military Institute, 69-37, and Ferrum, 74-21, on Saturday at the Clark King Pool on the campus of VMI.
First-year Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) led the Generals with three event wins, including two individual victories. In the 200 medley relay, Foster teamed up with senior Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School), sophomore Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) and first-year Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) to clock in at 1:54.29 for first place. Foster also took the top spot in the 50 free (26.76) and the 200 back in a time of 2:19.20.
Six more Generals pulled off event wins on the day. Senior Kelly Mae Ross (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) finished first in the 1000 free, recording a time of 11:16.98 and senior Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) touched the wall in 1:59.88 for first in the 200 free. Sophomore Hannah Melkun (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) finished atop the 100 breast, clocking in at 1:12.51 and Hamp claimed first in the 100 fly (1:00.99).
Other first-place performances include junior Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) in the 100 free (57.37) and first-year Meredith Murphy (Hillsboro, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Prep) in the 200 fly (2:18.61).
W&L has completed its regular season and will next enter the pool at the ODAC Championships on February 8-10 at the Greensboro Aquatics Center in Greensboro, N.C.
