RICHMOND, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team took over the competition on day one of the Yellow Jacket Invitational with first-place finishes in every event, hosted by Randolph-Macon at the Collegiate School Aquatics Center on Saturday.
W&L sits in first place with 906 points. Randolph-Macon (419), Marymount (355), Bridgewater (306), Notre Dame of Maryland (148), Greensboro (115), Frostburg State (73), Guilford (65) and West Virginia Tech (12) wraps up the team results.
Both the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay broke school records on the day. The 200 free relay consisting of first-years Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) and Emma Swabb (Erie, Pa./McDowell), junior Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) and senior Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) took first place in a record time of 1:40.28. Swabb and Hardy then teamed up with sophomore Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) and first-year Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) in the 400 medley relay to touch the wall in the school-record and first-place time of 4:03.53.
The Generals took the Top 6 spot s in the 200 IM, with Swabb leading the way, clocking in at 2:13.16. Junior Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md./Saint Paul's) was second (2:15.43), Foster finished third (2:16.36) and first-year Meredith Murphy (Hillsboro, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Prep came in fourth (2:16.66). In the fifth and sixth places were senior Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and Hamp, respectively.
In the 500 free, five W&L athletes placed in the Top 10. Senior Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) took the top spot in a time of 5:15.09, while first-year Grace Duncan (New Canaan, Conn/New Canaan) finished third (5:23.44) and sophomore Sydney Gay (Henrico, Va./Henrico) came in fourth (5:24.98). Senior Kelly Mae Ross (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) touched in fifth place (5:28.30) and first-year Elizabeth Platt (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Area) finished in seventh (5:30.02).
The 200 free top three spots were filled wit Generals as Hardy took first in a time of 1:56.59, Rolfe placed second (1:57.59) and Schaffer was third (1:58.60). Swabb also finished first in the 100 breast (1:10.63) with sophomore Mary Gabe (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) in second (1:12.56).
Foster registered two more event wins as she finished first in the 100 back (59.50) and teamed up with Schaffer, Hamp and Brassfield in the 200 medley relay to take first (1:48.99). Brassfield touched in third behind Foster in the 100 back in a time of 1:03.36 and Duncan came in sixth in the event (1:04.92).
The 800 medley relay closed out the day and was the final win for the Generals. The team of Hardy, Kasoff, Swabb and Brassfield clocked in at 7:55.40 for first place.
W&L returns to the pool on Sunday for day two competition at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, set to begin at 10:00 am.
