W&L Men's and Women's Swimming Finish Third at TCNJ Invite

EWING, N.J. – The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams both finished in third place of six teams after taking part in the final day of competition at The College of New Jersey Invitational on Sunday morning.

Johns Hopkins claimed the women's events with a final team score of 1074. Springfield College finished in second place (885), followed by W&L (780), TCNJ (714), West Chester (181) and Rowan (123).

Host TCNJ was the top finisher on the men's side with 1300.5 points, followed by Johns Hopkins (881.5), W&L (633.5), Springfield (630.5), West Chester (207) and Rowan (92).

Swimming two events on the day, the W&L women were led by the 800 free relay squad of sophomore Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park), first-years Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) and Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md./Saint Paul's) and junior Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep), who finished in second with a time of 8:06.75. The Generals also recorded a seventh-place finish in the event with the team of junior Erin Schwartz (Laytonsville, Md./Stone Ridge), sophomore Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day), first-year Rebecca Lawrence (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) and senior Becky Guynn (Salem, Va./Salem) swimming in 8:26.48.

Sophomore Ann McCampbell (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady School) led W&L in the 1650 free with a time of 18:08.37. W&L also received Top 10 finishes from senior Tess Hayden (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and junior Joanie Hudak (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet). Hayden swam to a fifth-place finish (18:50.52), while Hudak was seventh in a time of 19:03.88.

On the men's side, the 800 free relay of senior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy), junior Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and sophomores Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's) and Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) recorded a time of 7:23.28, good for ninth place. The men also had two swimmers record Top 10 finishes in the 1650 free, with first-years Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian Academy) finishing eighth (17:15.58) and Forrest Behne (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) in 10th (17:38.91).

Both squads will now break for the holidays and exams, returning to competition on January 15 when they host Gettysburg at Cy Twombly Pool.
