SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team set a pool record in the 200 free relay as it went on to defeat Sweet Briar, 145-106, on Friday evening at Prothro Natatorium.
Swimming exhibition, the team of first-year Rebecca Lawrence (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga), junior Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York), sophomore Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) and first-year Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) finished in a time of 1:53.06 in the 200 free relay, breaking a Prothro Natatorium event record that had stood since 1984.
In addition to the pool record, W&L (3-1) collected eight individual and one relay top placing for the evening. The Generals were paced by Fredericks, who recorded first-place finishes in the 100 back (1:10.86) and 100 free (1:02.25) in addition to swimming on the record-setting 200 free relay.
Six other Generals touched in with top times in their respective events, including senior Tess Hayden (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) in the 400 free (4:46.46) and sophomores Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) in the 200 fly (2:32.68) and Ann McCampbell (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady School) in the 200 back (2:33.67).
Three first-year swimmers swam to top placings, with Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md./Saint Paul's) recording a time of 2:16.79 in the 200 free, Alexandra Viers (Atlanta, Ga./Marist) finishing in 1:25.57 in the 100 breast and Michelle Szymczak (Chevy Chase, Md./Chevy Chase) touching in a time of 3:02.02 in the 200 breast.
The relay squad of Hayden, junior Erin Schwartz (Laytonsville, Md./Stone Ridge), sophomore Stephanie Krasnov (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) and senior Becky Guynn (Salem, Va./Salem) recorded the final first-place finish for W&L, swimming the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:13.02.
W&L returns to action on Nov. 20 as it travels to face Rochester, Carnegie Mellon and Franklin & Marshall at the F&M quad dual at 11:00 am.
