LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams claimed victories in a combined 15 events as they swept Transylvania University at the William T. Young Campus Center on Friday evening.
The men (2-0) claimed nine event victories while topping the Pioneers, 169-91. The women (1-1) were victorious in six events, defeating Transy by a score of 145-116.
For the W&L men, first-years Philip Dishuck (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic) and Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) paced the Generals, with each claiming two individual events. Dishuck took the top spot in the 1000 free with a time of 10:50.91, while also finishing tops in the 200 breast in a time of 2:26.45. Knuth was victorious in both the 100 back (56.40) and the 200 back (2:08.52).
Other individual winners for the men included senior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) in the 200 fly (2:04.11) and first-years David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) in the 100 breast (1:02.30), Forrest Behne (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) in the 500 free (5:15.67) and Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian) in the 100 fly (55.36). W&L also recorded one top-finishing relay, with the squad of first-years Brendan McGoldrick (Erdenheim, Pa./La Salle College) and Matthew Hesser (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School), senior Dorsey Terry (Gibbstown, N.J./Salesianum) and junior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) touching in with a time of 1:32.34.
On the women's side, five different swimmers recorded first-place finishes, along with one top relay. Juniors Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep) and Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) claimed event victories, with Starnes swimming the 1000 free in a time of 11:17.75, while Cassada took the 100 back with a time of 1:02.84. Sophomore Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) touched in with a top time of 2:20.73 in the 200 fly, while fellow classmate Ann McCampbell (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady School) finished best in the 500 free (5:32.32).
The final individual event winner was first-year Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md./Saint Paul's), who swam the 100 fly in a time of 1:02.79. The 200 medley relay squad also swam to a top finish, with members Cassada, Kasoff, junior Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) and sophomore Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) recording a time of 1:54.91.
Both squads return to action tomorrow as a part of the Centre College Invitational at the University of Louisville, starting at 2:00 pm.
