W&L Swimming Splits With Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams were in action on Saturday afternoon in a dual meet with Gettysburg College.  The 13th-ranked W&L men prevailed by a score of 178-79, but the W&L women fell, 142-122.

The men were led to victory in part due to the exploits of sophomore Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville), who won the 100 back (53.98), 200 back (1:56.14) and 200 IM (2:01.81) events.

The Generals’ 200 medley relay (1:39.09) and 200 free relay (1:27.70) teams both touched first in helping W&L improve to 6-3 on the season.  The 200 medley team featured first-year Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School), sophomores Robert Grattan (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) and Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and senior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy).  Sophomore Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook), Talluri, first-year Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and senior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee) all competed on the 200 free relay squad.

Barnds added a win in the 50 free with a time of 21.89, while Dexter touched first in the 100 breast (1:02.73).  Other winners on the day included senior Dan Austin (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont) in the 1000 free (10:16.36), senior Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) in the 200 fly (no times recorded), senior Ian Childers (Ona, W.Va./Greater Latrobe) in the 200 breast (2:19.13), junior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) in the 500 free (4:58.06) and sophomore Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) in the 100 fly (52.18).

For the W&L (4-4) women, sophomore Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep) and senior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) both had fantastic swims on the day.

Starnes won the 200 free (2:00.10) and 500 free (5:24.30) events, while Simpson won the 100 free (55.82) and competed on the winning 200 medley (1:55.87) and 200 free (1:43.46) relay teams.

Joining Simpson on the 200 medley squad were sophomores Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York), along with first-year Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham).  The 200 free relay team was comprised of Simpson, first-year Megan Bock (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), first-year Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) and senior Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School).

First-year Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) also picked up a win for the Generals when she touched first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:16.16.

All winning times constituted pool records as Gettysburg opened its new natatorium with the meet against the Generals.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday as it travels to Catholic University for a 2:00 pm double-dual with the Cardinals and Marymount.
