W&L Swimming Competes in Final Day of UVA Invitational
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s and
women’s swim teams were in action on Saturday at the final
day of the University of Virginia Invitational at the Aquatic and
Fitness Center in Charlottesville.
The men concluded the three-day meet third of four teams, while
the women finished fourth of six teams.
For the men, the team was paced by a fourth-place finish from the
squad of seniors Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) and
Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee) and sophomore Ian
Dexter (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) and Brian Stirling
(Skillman, N.J./Montgomery), touching in with a time of 3:08.24 in
the 400 free relay. W&L also recorded an NCAA ‘B’
cut time of 1:23.96 in a 200 free relay time trial. Members of the
squad included Dexter, Talluri, Barnds and first-year Rick Sykes
(Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley).
Top individual finishes for the men included sophomore Chris
Washnock’s (Greer, S.C./Greenville) fifth-place and NCAA 'B'
cut finish in the 200 back (1:53.26), Talluri touching in fifth
with a time of 47.68 in the 100 free, sophomore Ben Absher
(Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy) touching in 11th in the 1650
free with a time of 17:07.61, senior Ian Childers (Ona,
W.Va./Greater Latrobe) taking 11th in the 200 breast (2:17.05), and
junior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy)
recording a time of 1:57.56 and a 12th place finish in the 200
fly.
On the women’s side, the team was led by a 10th place finish
in the 400 free relay, with the squad of seniors Sarah Simpson
(Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) and Jenna Worsham (Cumming,
Ga./Wesleyan School), sophomore Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison,
Tenn./Girls Prep), and first-year Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro,
N.C./Greensboro Day School) recording a time of 3:42.11.
Top event finishes in individual events for the women included
first-year Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) finishing
14th in the 200 fly with a time of 2:14.67, Simpson’s 16th
place finish in the 100 free (54.14), senior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta,
Ga./Lovett) touching in 16th with a time of 2:34.46 in the 200
breast, first-year Ann McCampbell (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady
School) finishing 17th in the 1650 free with a time of 18:32.40 and
sophomore Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mount Saint Mary
Academy) taking 18th in the 200 back (2:12.54).
Both squads will now take a break from competition for the holiday
break, returning to action on Jan. 16 as they travel to Gettysburg
for a 2:00 pm meet.
