W&L Swimming Competes at University of Virginia Invitational
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s
and women’s swimming teams participated in the first day of
the University of Virginia Invitational on Thursday at the Aquatic
and Fitness Center in Charlottesville.
After one day of competition, the men are third out of four teams
with 170 points, while the women are fourth out of six teams with
82 points.
On the men's side, senior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills,
Kan./Shawnee), sophomore Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain
Brook) and first-years Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St.
Andrew’s) and Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) were
all a part of the 200 free relay squad that finished third with a
time of 1:24.22. The team of seniors Nick Talluri (Mount Airy,
N.C./Mount Airy), Josh Gonzalez (Bridgewater,
N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and sophomores Brian Stirling (Skillman,
N.J./Montgomery) and Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) also
placed in the 200 free relay, finishing seventh with a time of
1:28.54.
The 400 medley relay team of Talluri and sophomores Chris Washnock
(Greer, S.C./Greenville), Robert Grattan (Richmond, Va./Trinity
Episcopal) and Brian Stirling finished with a time of 3:30.67, good
for fourth place, while senior Ian Childers (Ona, W.Va./Greater
Latrobe), Barnds and sophomores Brad Harder (Redding, Conn./Joel
Barlow) and Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) touched in
with a time of 3:35.68 for seventh place in the event.
Individual finishes for the men included six swimmers in the 500
free, with junior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk
Academy) leading the way, recording a 15th place finish in a time
of 4:49.89. Washnock recorded a time of 1:55.24 to finish ninth in
the 200 IM, where the Generals had eight other swimmers place and
Sykes, Dexter and Barnds were part of an eighth, ninth, tenth place
finish in the 50 free, touching in at 21.37, 21.33 and 21.49,
respectively.
On the women’s side, the team recorded seventh and
ninth-place finishes in 200 free relay. The 200 free squad of
seniors Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) and Jenna
Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School), sophomore Dana Fredericks
(Yorktown, Va./York) and first-year Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro,
N.C./Greensboro Day School) touched in seventh with a time of
1:39.76, while junior Tess Hayden (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier),
sophomore Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep) and
first-years Andrea Seffens (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge), Megan Bock
(Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) touched in at 1:44.92 for ninth place.
Simpson, senior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett), sophomore
Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and
first-year Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished the 400
medley relay in eighth place with a time of 4:09.69 and were
followed by Fredericks, Worsham, sophomore Katie Salvati (Roselle
Park, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) and first-year Delaney Rolfe
(Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) who finished in ninth place with a
time of 4:09.83.
Individual finishes for the women included a 22nd place finish in
the 500 free for Rolfe (5:20.82), 20th and 22nd places finishes for
Worsham (2:14.36) and Fredericks (2:16.05) in the 200 IM, and a
24th place time of 25.00 for Simpson in the 50 free.
Both teams will return to action tomorrow for day two of the
University of Virginia Invitational.
