Women's Soccer at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore forward Betsy Kwiatkowski tallied the game's lone goal early in the first half to lead third-ranked Lynchburg to a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Washington and Lee in the semifinals of the ODAC women's soccer tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.

The Hornets quickly got on board when Kwiatkowski slipped an unassisted shot past senior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) at the 7:20 mark and LC held on for the shutout.

Lynchburg registered a 13-9 advantage in shots, while both teams had five corner kicks.

Sophomore Jackie Bader played the duration between the pipes for Lynchburg and stopped five would-be goals, while Moreo also played 90 minutes and recorded three saves for the Generals.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 18-0-3 overall and advance to the ODAC championship game on Saturday, while Washington and Lee concludes its season with a 13-5 overall mark.

Women's Soccer vs. Guilford

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) notched a hat trick to lead the third-seeded Washington and Lee women’s soccer team to a 6-0 victory over sixth-seeded Guilford in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

Van Devender got the Generals on board when she found the back of the net unassisted in the 26th minute.  Senior defender Marisa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) then connected with Van Devender, who scored again at 41:32  to give W&L a 2-0 lead going into halftime. The Blue and White continued to extend its lead with four second-half goals, including another tally by Van Devender at 49:27 en route to the six-goal triumph.

Van Devender was joined in the scoring column by sophomore midfielder Caroline Lamberti (Oakton, Va./Paul VI) and sophomore forward Laura Yungmeyer (Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns Bennett), who each added a marker, while first-year Hannah Deming (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) dished out one assist.

Senior netminder Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played 90 minutes for the Generals and registered three saves, while senior Amber Stapler (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) and first-year Kat Adams (Oak Island, N.C./South Brunswick) split time between the pipes and combined to stop 15 shots.

W&L out-shot GC, 32-5, and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Generals will face the winner of the Lynchburg/Randolph-Macon quarterfinal game in the semifinals on Wednesday. The game time has yet to be determined.

Women's Soccer at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team tallied three goals in the second half en route to a 4-0 ODAC-victory over Bridgewater on Wednesday afternoon.

First-year forward Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) opened the scoring when she found the back of the net off of a first-year forward Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) assist in the 17th minute as the Generals took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

W&L then upped its advantage in the second period when senior defender Sara Foster-Reeves (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) connected with senior forward Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic), who scored at the 45:20 mark. Senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) added another marker off of a Barnes assist just 1:09 later, while Foster-Reeves capped the scoring for the Blue and White with her first-ever collegiate goal in the 71st minute to give the Generals the four-goal triumph.

With the win, the Generals ended regular-season play with a 12-4 overall record and a 9-2 mark in the ODAC.

Senior netminder Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played 90 minutes in goal for W&L and did not face a shot, while first-years Shauna Manovich and Cari Hensley shared time between the pipes for the Eagles. Manovich registered 15 saves, while Hensley did not face a shot.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host Guilford at 1:00 pm in the quarterfinals of the 2008 ODAC Tournament.

Women's Soccer vs. Guilford

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) tallied two goals and two assists to lead the Generals’ women’s soccer team to a 5-0 win over Guilford on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

Van Devender opened the scoring just 1:55 into the game as she found the net unassisted. She then assisted on a goal by first-year forward Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) at the 3:53 mark and again scored unassisted just 25 seconds later for a 3-0 W&L lead just 4:18 into the game.

Senior defender Marisa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) gave W&L a 4-0 lead at the break when she scored off a Van Devender assist in the 35th minute. Junior midfielder Roz Klann (Denver, Colo./George Washington) capped the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute.

Senior Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) started in goal and recorded one save in 65:54. First-year Emily Leary (Loveland, Ohio/King’s) played the final 24:06 and notched a pair of stops. First-year Kat Adams made her first career start in goal for Guilford (7-11, 5-5), playing all 90 minutes and posting 13 saves.

Washington and Lee (11-4, 8-2) returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Bridgewater for a 4:00 pm contest.

Women's Soccer vs. Emory & Henry

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) notched two goals and dished out one helper as the Washington and Lee women’s soccer team shutout Emory & Henry, 10-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (10-4, 7-2) struck early when Van Devender found the back of the net unassisted at the 4:35 mark. W&L then added five more goals, including another from Van Devender to take a 6-0 lead into the half and cruise to the 10-goal victory.

With Van Devender’s two goals, she now ranks second all-time in career goals at W&L (58). Additionally, her 31 career assists and her 147 career points are also second all-time.

Van Devender was supported in the scoring column by first-year midfielders Camille Cobb (Huntersville, N.C./Harding University) and Hannah Deming (Princeton, N.J./Princeton), who both netted two scores, apiece. First-year forward Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and sophomore midfielder Taylor Garrett (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) also added one goal and dished out one assist, apiece.

Women's Soccer vs. Mary Washington

LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year forward Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) registered her first-ever collegiate hat trick and dished out one assist to lead the Washington and Lee women’s soccer team to a 5-2 triumph over Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals struck early when senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) connected with Barnes, who found the back of the net at the 6:13 mark. Senior midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) then blasted a shot past UMW senior netminder Laura McCarthy (Glen Rock, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) just 7:10 later. Kern added another marker off of an assist from Barnes at 24:50 to take a 3-0 lead, however, UMW countered just 1:24 later when junior forward Kate Parvin (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) scored unassisted and sliced it to a two-goal game entering the half.

Barnes helped pad the Generals’ lead in the second half with a pair of unassisted goals at 50:14 and 60:07, respectively, to give the Generals a 5-1 lead. The Eagles answered back in the 70th minute when first-year forward Nicole Dierkes (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) fed the ball to first-year defender Amy Olson (Crofton, Md./Arundel), who snuck a shot past W&L first-year netminder Emily Leary (Loveland, Ohio/Kings), but it would not be enough as the Blue and White held on for the three-goal victory.

Washington and Lee (9-4) outshot Mary Washington 23-9 and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Leary played the entire game between the pipes and registered two saves for W&L, while UMW’s (7-5-4) McCarthy and first-year Grace Rosales (Vienna, Va./Madison) split time in goal and combined to stop eight shots.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Junior midfielder Ashley Hoath registered the game-winning goal in the second half to lead No. 2 Lynchburg to a 2-1 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC women’s soccer action on Saturday evening at Shellenberger Field.

The Hornets (11-0-3, 4-0-2) struck early in the first half when sophomore midfielder Lindsay Gengras connected with first-year Joanie Snyder, who snuck one past W&L senior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) at 10:58. First-year forward Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) answered back in the 40th minute to knot the score 1-1 going into the half. 

The score remained tied in the second period until Hoath blasted a shot past Moreo at 61:33 and the Hornets held on for the one-goal victory.

Moreo played all 90 minutes and registered seven saves for W&L (8-4-0, 6-2), while sophomore netminder Jackie Bader also played the duration and stopped three would-be goals for LC.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host Mary Washington for a 3:00 pm game.

The Generals (8-3, 6-1) got on board when junior midfielder Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) found the back of the net unassisted at the 30:46 mark to give W&L a 1-0 advantage at the half.

Washington and Lee then scored a pair of goals in the opening 4:24 of the second period as first-year forwards Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) and Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) both tallied markers en route to the shutout.

The Generals (7-3, 5-1) got on board first when Barnes found Espina, who snuck one past junior goalkeeper Mary Jocelyn (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) at 12:43 to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

W&L upped its lead in the second half when Barnes scored off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Taylor Garrett (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) at 61:49. Espina then found first-year forward Anne Masich (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B Broughton), who found the back of the net in the 76th minute and the Generals cruised to the shutout.

First-year netminder Emily Leary (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) played the duration and did not stop any shots for the Generals, while Jocelyn also played 90:00 minutes and registered 13 saves for the Yellow Jackets (6-4, 2-4).

SWEET BRIAR, Va. --The Washington and Lee women's soccer team scored four goals in the second half en route to a 5-0 victory over Sweet Briar on Wednesday afternoon at the Babcock Athletic Field.

After 35 minutes of scoreless play, the Generals got on board when junior midfielder Maggie Sutherland (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) scored unassisted to take a 1-0 lead at the half.

W&L (6-3, 4-1) opened up scoring in the second half when first-year defender Page Minton (Bowling Green, Ky.Bowling Green) found first-year defender Briegel Moss (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart, who sent one past SBC first-year netminder Seanne Weekes at 54:07. Minton added another marker off of an assist from Moss just 37 seconds later to take a 3-0 lead and the Generals held on for the five-goal triumph.

First-year Emily Leary (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) played the full 90:00 between the pipes for W&L and registered three saves, while Weekes also played the duration and stopped five shots for SBC (2-5, 0-2).

Women's Soccer at Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- First-year forwards Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) and Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) totaled six points apiece to lead the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to an 11-0 triumph over Randolph on Sunday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va.

Senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) opened the scoring for W&L with two goals, one off of an assist from senior midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) and another from Barnes, to give the Generals a 2-0 lead just 17:12 into the contest. The Blue and White scored five more times in the first half, including two tallies from Barnes, to take a 7-0 lead into half time. W&L then added four additional goals in the second period, including three from Espina, and cruised to the 11-goal victory.

Barnes and Espina's six points paced the Generals, while Van Devender found the back of the net twice and Kern notched one goal and two assists. First-year defender Heather Deisher (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Cape Central), first-year midfielder Hannah Deming (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) and first-year forward Anne Masich (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B Broughton) chipped in with one goal apiece, while sophomore midfielder Caroline Lamberti (Oakton, Va./Paul VI) dished out two assists.

Women's Soccer vs. Messiah

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore forward Erin Hench (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) netted the game-winning goal with eight seconds remaining in overtime to lead No. 1 Messiah to a 4-3 win over Washington and Lee in women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Falcons (8-0-2) got on board first when senior midfielder Kacie Klynstra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) found sophomore forward Joanna Haqq (Belchertown, Mass./Home School), who sent one past senior netminder Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) at 9:46. The Generals responded when senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) connected with junior midfielder Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy), who slipped one past senior goalkeeper Brindley Beckwith (Upper Montclair, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic) at 34:58. First-year defender Corinne Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) then netted a goal off of a Van Devender corner at 43:09 to give the Generals a 2-1 advantage going into the half.

W&L (4-3) held onto the one-goal advantage until 65:04 when Messiah’s first-year forward Rachel Loya (Verona, Pa./Penn Hills) snuck an unassisted shot past Moreo to tie the contest, 2-2. Van Devender answered back 10:12 later when she scored unassisted to put the Generals back on top (3-2). However, Hench tallied the tying-goal at 82:32 to send the contest into an extra session and then the game-winning marker at 99:52 to give the Falcons the victory.

Women's Soccer vs. Hollins

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) notched two goals and two assists as the Washington and Lee women’s soccer team defeated Hollins, 11-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (4-2, 2-1) quickly got on board when Van Devender found the back of the net off of a sophomore forward Laura Yungmeyer (Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns Bennett) assist at 1:47. W&L then added five more goals, including a pair from first-year forward Anne Masich (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B Broughton), to take a 6-0 lead into the half and cruise to the 11-goal victory.

Van Devender’s six points paced the Generals, while first-year forwards Masich and Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) tallied two goals apiece. Yungmeyer and first-year forward Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) also registered one goal and one assist to aid the Blue and White’s effort.

W&L senior netminder Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) and first-year Emily Leary (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) split time between the pipes and did not make any saves, while HU (1-5, 0-3) sophomore Elizabeth Bills (High Point, N.C./High Point Central) played the entire 90:00 and stopped 16 would-be goals.

Women's Soccer at Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Junior midfielder Stacey Zeiler tallied the game-winning goal to lead Virginia Wesleyan to a 2-1 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Foster Field.

The Marlins (3-1-2, 3-0) got on board first when junior forward Jerilyn Sweeney found the back of the net off of a sophomore forward Courtney Whorten assist at 18:35 to take a 1-0 edge at the half.

Both teams remained scoreless over the next 39:27, until VWC’s first-year forward Katie Kooiman found Zeiler, who tallied the game-winner at 58:02 (2-0). Junior midfielder Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) notched the Generals’ lone goal at 88:53 (2-1), but it would not be enough as the Marlins held on for the one-goal victory.

W&L (3-2-1, 1-1) senior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played the entire 90:00 and registered seven saves, while junior Allison Lennox also played the full duration and stopped seven shots for VWC.

Women's Soccer vs. Ferrum

LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year Anne Masich (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B Broughton) registered her first-ever career hat trick to lead the Washington and Lee women’s soccer team to a 9-0 victory over Ferrum on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (3-1) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first 9:10 of the contest aided by goals from senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Rosemary Choate Rosemary Hall). First-year forward Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) found the back of the net off of a first-year midfielder Dory Blackey (Versailles, Ky./Sayre School) assist at 27:44 to give the Blue and White a 3-0 advantage at the half. W&L then added six more goals, including Masich’s hat trick late in the second half, to cruise to the 9-0 final.

Masich’s six points paced the Generals, while Van Devender registered five points on two goals and one assist. Senior forward Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) and Barnes tallied two goals apiece, respectively, while Blackey chipped in two assists in the Blue and White’s effort.

First-year goalkeeper Emily Leary (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) played the entire contest between the pipes for W&L and did not make any saves, while FC (1-5) sophomores Katie Hodkinson (Mt. Crawford, Va./Spotswood) and Bridgett Hall ( Ruther Glen, Va./VCU) and first-year Houstan Boles (Lawsonville, N.C./Patrick County) split time in goal combining to make 15 saves.

Women's Soccer vs. Roanoke

LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year forwards Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) netted two goals apiece to lead the Washington and Lee women’s soccer team to a 4-1 victory over ODAC-foe Roanoke in the home-opener on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Maroons (2-3-1, 0-1) quickly got on board when senior forward Kristen McCoy (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) found the back of the net unassisted just 1:25 into the first half. W&L countered 14:54 later when Espina slipped a shot past Roanoke goalkeeper Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, Va./Mountain View) at 16:09 (1-1). The Generals added another marker when Barnes scored the game-winner unassisted at 41:27 to give W&L a 2-1 edge at the half.  Barnes and Espina helped pad the Generals’ lead with scores at 53:30 and 73:53, respectively, en route to the three-goal victory.

Senior netminder Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played the entire contest for the Blue and White and did not make any saves, while Kooiman stopped five shots for Roanoke.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday as they take on Ferrum at home. The game is slated to begin at 4:30 pm.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Transylvania junior midfielder Katie McKelway recorded a second-half hat trick to lead the Pioneers to a 3-1 win over the Washington and Lee women’s soccer team in the second day of the Glenn Hyundai College Classic hosted by Transylvania on Sunday afternoon at Hall Field.

The Generals (1-1) got on board first when senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) found the back of the net at 26:53 to give the Blue and White a 1-0 advantage at the half. However, McKelway provided the tying-goal in the 66th minute and then registered the game-winning goal at 82:46 en route to the two-goal victory.

Senior netminder Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played the full 90:00 and made one save, while first-year goalkeeper Kara Hansel also played the entire contest and stopped two shots.

The Colonels (0-2) got on board first when sophomore midfielder Brittany Garr found the back of the net unassisted at 40:03. The Generals (1-0) answered back when first-year midfielder Hannah Deming (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) connected with first-year defender Corinne Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley), who headed it into the net at 42:50 to tie the contest, 1-1, going into the half.

W&L got on board again at 60:43, when Van Devender slipped one past Centre junior goalkeeper Rosie McAuley to give the Blue and White its first lead of the game. Senior forward Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) added an insurance goal at 62:37 for the 3-1 final.
