Women's Soccer at Roanoke

SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke's Jessica Joyner scored the game-winner as the Maroons topped Washington and Lee, 2-1, in the semifinals of the ODAC Women's Soccer Tournament on Wednesday evening at Kerr Stadium.

Tied at the half, the Maroons (17-2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute as Kristen McCoy scored off an assist from Meredith Gruenwald. The Generals (16-4) quickly retaliated with a goal from senior forward Shana Oltmans (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) less than four minutes later to knot the score at 1-1 in the 58th minute, but Joyner found the back of the net from close range in the 62nd minute to give RC the win.

Junior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) made one save for W&L, while Erin Hanson stopped five would-be goals for RC.

With the win, the Maroons advance to the 2007 ODAC Championship match and will take the winner of the Virginia Wesleyan/Lynchburg contest on Saturday. The Generals will find out on Sunday evening if they received an at-large bid to the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

Women's Soccer vs. Eastern Mennonite

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee advanced to the semifinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament for the 19th-straight season with a 3-1 win over Eastern Mennonite in the ODAC Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (16-3) took a 2-0 lead into halftime off goals from junior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) in the 21st minute and sophomore midfielder Roz Klann (Denver, Colo./George Washington) in the 34th minute.

W&L added to its lead with tally from senior forward Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) that was set up by junior midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) at 68:51. Eastern Mennonite (9-7-2) tightened the contest to 3-1 when junior forward Katie Lamm (Newmanstown, Va./Eastern Lebanon Co.) slipped one past freshman goalkeeper Taylor Joosten (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) in the 80th minute, but it wasn’t enough as the Generals held on for the win.

Junior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played the majority of the contest for W&L, making two saves, before getting relieved by Joosten in the 78th minute. EMU’s Abigale Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) tallied 12 saves.

W&L will face the winner of the Roanoke/Randolph-Macon quarterfinal in the semifinals on Wednesday. The game time has yet to be determined.

Women's Soccer at Eastern Mennonite

 HARRISONBURG, Va. – Junior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary) tallied one goal and two assists as the Washington and Lee women’s soccer team posted a 3-1 win over Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.

Van Devender helped the Generals (15-3, 9-2) take a 2-0 halftime lead as she assisted on goals by junior midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) in the eighth minute and senior forward Shana Oltmans (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) in the 44th minute. She then extended the W&L edge in the second half with a goal at 58:13. Jessica Myers scored the Royals’ lone goal in the 83rd minute, but it wasn’t enough as W&L held on for the 3-1 triumph.

Junior netminder Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) tallied one save for W&L, while Abigale Diffenbach made five saves for EMU (9-6-2, 6-5). This contest concluded the regular season for both teams.

With the win, the Generals will most likely be the third seed in the 2007 ODAC Women’s Soccer Tournament and will host the sixth seed on Saturday. Game time and opponent have yet to be determined.

Women's Soccer at Roanoke

SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke's Meredith Grunewald scored in the second overtime period to give the Maroons a 2-1 win over the 23rd-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team on Saturday evening at Kerr Stadium.

Roanoke (13-2-1, 9-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the first half as Kristen McCoy made good on a penalty kick in the eighth minute, but junior midfielder Kate Corr (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) responded 75 minutes later with the tying goal for W&L (13-3, 8-2) to send the game to overtime.

The two teams were scoreless in the first extra period, but Grunewald found the net with just 2:36 to play in the second overtime to give RC the win.

Junior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played the entire contest in goal for W&L, making seven saves. Erin Hanson made four stops for Roanoke.

The Generals finish up their regular season schedule on Tuesday when they take on Eastern Mennonite at 3:00 pm.

Women's Soccer vs. Lynchburg

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 23rd-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team posted its ninth-straight victory with a 2-0 win over Lynchburg on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

After a scoreless first half, a cross by junior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) was deflected into the goal by a Lynchburg defender to give the Generals a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute.

W&L added an insurance score with less than five minutes to play in the contest when two-straight shots from freshman midfielder Caroline Lamberti (Oakton, Va./Paul VI) ricocheted off the post and Van Devender booted in the rebound from close range.

Junior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) tallied five saves for W&L as she picked the shutout-win. Freshman netminder Jackie Bader (Fort Washington, Md./Bishop Ireton) made two saves for the Hornets.

With the win, W&L improves to 14-2 (8-1 ODAC), while LC falls to 13-3-1 (7-2 ODAC) with the loss.

Women's Soccer vs. Rhodes

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Washington and Lee Head Coach Neil Cunningham tallied his 100th career victory at W&L and junior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) notched the game-winner as the 25th-ranked women's soccer team won its eighth-straight match, 2-1, over Rhodes on Sunday afternoon at the Monarch Soccer-Plex.

The Generals (13-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute as senior midfielder Haley Bunting (Houston, Texas/St. John's) found the back of the net off an assist from Van Devender. Rhodes (7-6) responded with a goal from Diana Buss to knot the score at 1-1 at 30:50, but Van Devender scored the go-ahead-goal for W&L less than eight minutes into the second half to lead the Blue and White to the triumph.

With the win, Cunningham now owns a career record of 100-18-16 (.806).

Junior Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) made eight saves in goal for W&L, while Becca Clarin stopped five would-be goals for the Lynx.

The Generals continue their 2007 season when they host Lynchburg on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The 25th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team defeated Methodist, 2-0, to win its seventh-consecutive match on Saturday afternoon at the Monarch Soccer-Plex in Fayettevile, N.C.

The Generals (12-2) got on the board in the first half with an unassisted tally from junior midfielder Kate Corr (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) at 29:05. W&L then followed that up with a second-half score from junior forward Anne Van Devender, who was dished a through-ball from senior defender Diana Dozier (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) in the 55th minute.

Junior netminder Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) made one save for the Blue and White, while Kasey Nichols tallied four stops for the Monarchs (11-3).

With the win, Head Coach Neil Cunningham is just one victory shy of his 100th career win at W&L. Over his seven seasons at W&L, Cunningham owns a career record of 99-18-16 (.805).

Women's Soccer vs. Sweet Briar

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) tallied a first-half hat trick to lead the 25th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 10-0 win over Sweet Briar at Watt Field on Tuesday afternoon.

With her three scores, Van Devender became just the fourth player in W&L women's soccer history to notch 100 career points as she now owns 42 career goals and 19 career assists (103 career points).

Van Devender registered three of the first four goals of the contest to give W&L a 4-0 lead in the 25th minute and the Generals never looked back as they rolled to the 10-0 final.

Van Devender was supported in the scoring column by senior forward Shana Oltmans (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley), who notched two goals, and freshman midfielder Laura Yungmeyer's (Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns Bennett) two helpers.

LEXINGTON, Va. - The 25th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team posted its fifth-straight shutout victory with a 1-0 blanking of Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals got on the board early in the first half when junior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) dished the ball to junior midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic), who slipped the ball past CNU goalkeeper Erin Wojtkun (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) in the sixth minute, and W&L held on for the win.

With the victory, junior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) notched her 31st career shutout and ranks first all-time at W&L in that category. Moreo made four saves, while Wojtkun tallied five stops.

W&L (9-2, 5-1) then found the back of the net two more times in the following ten minutes off scores from Van Devender and freshman midfielder Taylor Garrett (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) to take a 3-0 lead in the 60th minute. W&L finalized its scoring for the outing when junior defender Marisa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) headed in a corner kick that was taken by junior midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) at 75:44.

The Blue and White scored three more times in the first half, including a tally from Bunting, to take a 5-0 lead into half time and never looked back as it posted the 7-0 win.

Women's Soccer at Hollins

HOLLINS, Va. -- Junior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) notched two goals and two assists as the Washington and Lee women's soccer team won its fifth-straight contest with a 9-0 defeat of Hollins on Wednesday afternoon in Hollins, Va.

The Generals (5-1, 3-0) got on the board just 30 seconds into the contest when freshman forward Laura Yungmeyer (Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns Bennett) scored off an assist from junior midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic). W&L then added six more goals, including Van Devender's pair, to take a 7-0 lead into the half and cruise to the 9-0 final.

Van Devender's six points paced the Generals, while freshman midfielder Taylor Garrett (Birmingham, Ala/Mountain Brook) and senior forward Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) each tallied two goals. Yungmeyer also contributed one goal and one assist to the Blue and White's effort.

Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Joosten (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius College Prep) made one save in her first collegiate start for W&L, while Elizabeth Bills stopped 16 would-be goals for HU (2-6, 0-2).

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan at 11:00 am.

Women's Soccer vs. Greensboro

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore midfielder Roz Klann (Denver, Colo./George Washington) registered the game-winning goal off a penalty kick to help the Washington and Lee women's soccer team achieve its fourth-straight win with a 3-1 victory over Greensboro on Sunday afternoon at Watt Field.

After over two-thirds of scoreless play, Greensboro (4-1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute on a tally from freshman forward Cassie Shepherd (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich), but W&L retaliated with a score from junior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) at 76:57 to tie the contest at 1-1.

The Generals (4-1) were then awarded a penalty kick after a handball in the penalty box and Klann made good on the kick to give W&L the lead with 5:07 left in the contest. Junior midfielder Kate Corr (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) added an insurance goal in the 89th minute for the 3-1 final.

 W&L junior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) did not register a save, while junior netminder Shana Saganich (McLeansville, N.C./Northeast Guilford) made 10 stops for the Pride.

 Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Hollins for a 4:00 pm contest.

Women's Soccer at Randolph-Macon

Junior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) tallied one goal and assisted on the game-winner as the Washington and Lee women's soccer team posted a 4-1 win over Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Va.

After a scoreless first half, the Generals (3-1, 2-0) got on the board when Van Devender scored unassisted in the 59th minute. Randolph-Macon (2-4, 0-2) countered with a goal from Brittany Jones nine minutes later to tie the game at 1-1 with less than 24 minutes to play in the contest.

However, junior midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W. Va./Charleston Catholic) headed the ball into the net off a cross from Van Devender to give W&L the lead for good at 70:54. Seniors Mary Clair Turner (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School) and Diana Dozier (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) helped pad the Generals' lead with scores at 74:52 and 88:21, respectively.

W&L held a 31-2 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played the duration for W&L and did not register a save. Mary Jocelyn minded the net for the Yellow Jackets, posting nine saves.

The Generals continue their 2007 campaign on Sunday as they take on Greensboro at 2:00 pm at Watt Field.

Women's Soccer vs. Randolph

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) posted two goals and one assist to lead Washington and Lee to a 9-0 win over Randolph in ODAC women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (2-1, 1-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 13 minutes of the contest aided by goals from junior midfielder Kate Corr (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and sophomore midfielder Roz Klann (Denver, Colo./George Washington). Two tallies from Van Devender and another by junior forward Erica Giordano (Cranford, N.J./Mount. St. Mary Academy) gave W&L a 5-0 first-half advantage and the Blue and White continued to extend its lead with four second-half goals en route to the 9-0 final.

Van Devender was joined in the scoring column by Klann and Giordano, who each added two goals. Senior forward Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) registered one goal and one helper, while Corr and freshman forward Karen Lambdin (Greenwood, Miss./Pillow Academy) contributed one goal apiece.

W&L out-shot Randolph (0-4, 0-1), 58-0, and held a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Victoria Johnson (Hartfield, Va./Middlesex) faced 29 shots on goal and made 20 saves for the WildCats. Junior Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) and freshman Taylor Joosten (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius College Prep) each played a half in the net for W&L, combining for the shutout.

Women's Soccer vs. Sewanee

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore midfielder Roz Klann (Denver, Colo./George Washington) struck early in the first half as the 13th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over Sewanee in the second day of the W&L Classic on Sunday afternoon.

The Generals (1-1) got on the board in the 13th minute when junior defender Marisa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) delivered the ball to Klann. Despite several Sewanee counterattacks, the Blue and White held on for the one-goal win.

Junior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) tallied six saves for the Generals, while also picking up her 27th career shutout. Moreo now ranks tied for second all-time at W&L in career shutouts. Freshman goalkeeper Catherine Frampton (New Orleans, La./Newman) racked up 15 saves for Sewanee (2-1).

In the second game of the classic, Denison improved to 4-1 with an 8-1 win over Randolph-Macon (2-2). Anna Rusch's hat trick led to the Big Red victory.

W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it opens ODAC action with a match against Randolph College. The game will begin at 4:30 pm.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Denison freshman midfielder Jennifer Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./Baylor) scored the lone goal of the contest as the 10-ranked Big Red defeated 13th-ranked Washington and Lee, 1-0, in the first game of the Washington and Lee Women's Soccer Classic at Watt Field on Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, Denison got on the scoreboard as Clemmer sent one past W&L junior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) at 47:47.

Denison (3-1) held a 17-12 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks over the Blue and White. Moreo stopped six would-be goals for the Generals (0-1).

Senior netminder Liz Gillette (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame) also made six stops for the Big Red.

In the second game of the W&L Classic, Sewanee downed Randolph-Macon, 2-0. Sophomore midfielder Allison Davis (Carbondale, Ill./Carbondale) and freshman forward La'Toyia Slay (Greenville, Miss./St. Joseph's) each tallied a goal in the Tigers' win.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday as it takes on Sewanee in the second day of the W&L Classic at 12:00 pm. The second game features Denison and Randolph-Macon and is slated to start at 2:30 pm.
