W&L FALLS TO NO. 17 LYNCHBURG, 2-0 (10/29)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The No. 4 seeded Washington and Lee women's soccer team ended its season with a 2-0 loss to No. 1 seeded Lynchburg College in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on Friday in Lynchburg, Va.

Lynchburg (18-1-2) opened the scoring just 1:50 into the contest when Jennifer Clayton headed in a cross from Heather Voss. Neither team was able to tally another goal until with just 1:18 left in the contest. Kerrie Swarts scored the insurance goal for the Hornets off an assist from Kristin Kowit.

For the match, Lynchburg outshot W&L by a count of 17-5. The Hornets also led in corner kicks,10-0. Senior Stephanie McKnight (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and junior Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) combined to stop seven shots in goal for the Generals. W&L ends its season with a record of 11-7.

W&L ADVANCES TO ODAC SEMIFINALS WITH 1-0 WIN OVER VWC IN WOMEN'S SOCCER (10/26)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The No. 4 seeded Washington and Lee women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament with a 1-0 shutout win over the No. 5 seeded Blue Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College.

The only goal of the match was scored at the 6:52 mark by W&L freshman midfielder Ruth-Hill Yeilding (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook). Yeilding scored on a header off of a flip-throw from the sideline by freshman midfielder Jenny Thomas (High Point, N.C./Central). Goalkeeper Janine Swanson kept the Marlins (7-7-3) in the contest by stopping seven General shots. For the game, W&L outshot the Marlins by a count of 18-5.

Senior Stephanie McKnight (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and junior Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) split time in goal, sharing the shutout for the Generals.

W&L (11-6) will return to action on Friday, October 29, when it travels to Lynchburg College to face the No. 1 seeded Hornets in the ODAC Tournament Semifinals at 12:30 pm.

W&L DROPS TO R-MC, 3-2, IN WOMEN'S SOCCER (10/23)

ASHLAND, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team lost its final regular-season match to the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon by a count of 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Va.

The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead early with a goal by Cheryl Dickter at the 32:32 mark. W&L tied the score at 1-1 just :57 later when freshman midfielder Jenny Thomas (High Point, N.C./Central), rifled a shot past R-MC goalkeeper Carrie Plunkett. W&L took its only lead of the game 8:45 into the second half when freshman forward Ruth Hill Yeilding (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) tallied off an assist from junior midfielder Shana Levine (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson). The Jackets scored twice within the last 30 minutes to claim the 3-2 victory. W&L drops to 10-6 overall, 8-3 in the ODAC.

W&L will play in the ODAC tournament first-round on Tuesday, October 26. Neither the site of the match nor the opponent have been determined.

W&L DOWNS E&H, 1-0 (10/21)

EMORY, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team triumphed over the Wasps of Emory & Henry by a count of 1-0 on Thursday afternoon in Emory, Va.

Sophomore forward Noelle Beckman (Asheville, N.C./A.C. Reynolds) scored the only goal of the match at the 58:20 mark. The goal was her third of the season. The Generals held the Wasps (4-10-3, 2-7-2 ODAC) to only three shots during the contest. Junior Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) and sophomore Kate Mobley (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) split time in goal for W&L, each recording one save. Emory and Henry goalkeeper Melissa Berry garnered eight saves on the day. W&L (10-5, 8-2 ODAC) outshot the Wasps 18-3.

For its final regular-season match of the year, W&L will travel to Randolph-Macon on Saturday, October 23. Gametime is set for 2:00 pm.

W&L UPENDS NOTRE DAME (MD), 4-0 (10/16)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team raced to a 4-0 win over the College of Notre Dame (Md) in Lexington, Va., on Saturday.

W&L (9-5, 7-2 ODAC) tallied all four goals prior to halftime. Sophomore midfielder Drew Powers (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) got the Generals on the board at the 14:30 mark when she knocked in a rebound from CND goalkeeper Laura Cool. Junior back Shana Levine (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) increased the lead to 2-0, scoring at the 28:07 mark off an assist from junior midfielder Liz Olson (Brookfield, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee). Olson made the lead 3-0 with 14:52 left in the half, scoring on a chip shot off of a cross by junior midfielder Courtney Nolan (Princeton, N.J./Princeton). Junior forward Lindsay Williams (Atlanta, Ga./Phillips Academy) capped the scoring at the 33:59 mark, scoring on a deflection off a Notre Dame defender. W&L outshot the Gators by a count of 27-2 en route to the win.

For its next game, W&L will travel to Emory & Henry on October 21. Gametime is set for 4:00 pm.

W&L DROPS 1-0 OVERTIME LOSS TO #5 LYNCHBURG (10/13)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Lynchburg Hornets raised their ODAC record to 9-0 on the season with a 1-0 overtime victory against Washington and Lee on Wednesday afternoon in Lexington, Va.

Junior forward Kacey Crabbe (Herndon, Va./Herndon) scored the game-winning goal at the 99:44 mark, just under 10 minutes into the first overtime, to extend the Hornets' win streak to nine matches. Crabbe tallied her goal by following a deflected shot taken by freshman midfielder Nikki Wisniewski (Berlin, N.J./Bishop Eustace).

On the game, Lynchburg (15-0-1, 9-0 ODAC) outshot W&L by a count of 18-2. Senior Stephanie McKnight (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and junior Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) combined for nine saves in goal for the Generals (8-5, 7-2 ODAC). Lynchburg entered the match ranked #5 in the latest NSCAA national poll and #1 in the South Region.

For its next game, W&L will host the College of Notre Dame (Md.) on Saturday, October 16. Gametime is set for 2:00 pm.

W&L SHUTS OUT BRIDGEWATER, 2-0, IN WOMEN'S SOCCER (10/9)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team raised its ODAC record to 7-1 on the season with a 2-0 victory over Bridgewater College on Saturday in Lexington, Va.

Junior midfielder Lindsay Williams (Atlanta, Ga./Phillips Academy) got the Generals (8-4, 7-1 ODAC) on the scoreboard first with a goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Drew Powers (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) at the 28:29 mark. The game remained 1-0 until W&L senior Stephanie McKnight (Frederick, Md./Frederick) added the clincher for the Generals with only 1:30 left in the match. McKnight, who also played 30 minutes in goal for W&L, scored off a pass from junior midfielder Courtney Nolan (Princeton, N.J./Princeton). McKnight, junior Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill), and sophomore Kate Mobley (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) shared the shutout in goal for the Generals.

W&L outshot the Eagles (4-6, 3-5 ODAC) by a count of 25-4 on the match. Bridgewater goalkeeper Julianne Blevins made seven saves on the day.

For its next game, W&L will host conference leading Lynchburg College on Wednesday, October 13. Gametime is set for 4:00 pm.

W&L DOWNED BY ROANOKE, 3-1 (10/6)

ROANOKE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team suffered its first ODAC loss of the season by a count of 3-1 to the Maroons of Roanoke College on Wednesday.

Junior midfielder Shana Levine (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) scored what proved to be the only goal of the game for the Generals just 2:59 into the match when she knocked in a free kick from 35 yards out. W&L took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

After the intermission, the Maroons quickly took control of the match, scoring three goals within the first 12 minutes of the second half. The goals were tallied by Andee Moore, Cori Grant, and Courtney Gross. For the game, the Generals outshot Roanoke (8-5, 7-1 ODAC) by a count of 23-8.

Senior Stephanie McKnight (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and junior Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) split time in goal for the Generals (7-4, 6-1 ODAC).

For its next contest, W&L will host Bridgewater College on Saturday, October 9. Gametime is set for 10:30 am.

W&L OUTLASTS GUILFORD, 3-2, IN WOMEN'S SOCCER (10/2)

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team extended its perfect ODAC record with an exciting 3-2 win over Guilford College on Saturday.

Junior midfielder Shana Levine (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) opened the scoring just 16:04 into the match when she redirected a free kick from junior midfielder Liz Olson (Brookfield, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee). The Quakers (4-7, 2-4 ODAC) tied the game at the 47:17 mark when Kerrie Campbell scored the first of her two goals. Sophomore midfielder Noelle Beckman (Asheville, N.C./A.C. Reynolds) retaliated for W&L (7-3, 6-0 ODAC) with her second goal of the season just 17:58 later. Campbell once again scored for Guilford, this time knotting the score at 2-2, before sophomore forward Lindsay Williams (Atlanta, Ga./Phillips Acad.) notched the game-winner on a header for the Generals with just 3:52 remaining.

Washington and Lee outshot Guilford by a count of 32-10 during the game.

For their next match, the Generals will travel to Roanoke College on Wednesday, October 6. Gametime is set for 4:00 pm.

W&L DEFEATS SWEET BRIAR BY A COUNT OF 8-1 (9/30)

LEXINGTON, VA -- Junior midfielder Liz Olson (Brookfield, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) tallied two goals and assisted on another to help lead Washington and Lee to an 8-1 victory over Sweet Briar on Thursday afternoon at the Liberty Hall Fields.

Sophomore midfielder Drew Powers (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) began the scoring with 4:20 gone-by as she found the back of the net off an assist from Olson. Olson then scored her first goal of the match at the 38:30 mark to give the Generals a 2-0 advantage that they would take into halftime.

Olson and Powers would add another goal each at the 46:41 and 53:20 marks, respectively, before freshman forward Ingrid Zenzen (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) scored the lone goal of the game (54:08) for the Vixens (2-9. 0-7).

W&L (6-3, 5-0) outshot Sweet Briar 42-7 and took eight corner kicks as opposed to none for the Vixens. Freshman Margaret Van Hook (Lexington, Ky./Tates Creek) registered 17 saves in goal for SBC.

W&L will be in action again on Saturday afternoon as it travels to Greensboro, N.C., to take on Guilford at 2:00 pm.

W&L LOSES TO METHODIST, 4-1, IN WOMEN'S SOCCER

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Washington and Lee lost to Methodist on Sunday by a score of 4-1 in women's soccer.

Methodist was led by Jill Catron, who posted a hat-trick against the Generals (5-3). Catron scored the first two goals of the match. She put Methodist ahead just 5:45 into the game off an assist from Alyson Slavin. Catron scored her second goal on a breakaway at the 27:40 mark.

Drew Powers (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) scored the only goal of the game for W&L. Her tally came at the 84:10 mark, drawing the Generals within a 3-1 score. Catron notched the final Methodist goal with only 1:10 remaining in the contest. For the game, W&L outshot Methodist 27-7.

The Generals return to action on September 30, against Sweet Briar College. Gametime is set for 4:30 pm in Lexington.

W&L WOMEN LOSE TO N.C. WESLEYAN IN SOCCER

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Washington and Lee suffered its second loss of the season on Saturday by a score of 3-0 at the hands of North Carolina Wesleyan.

The Battlin' Bishops (5-1-3) opened the scoring just 4:28 into the match when freshman midfielder Caitlin Sanderson scored off an assist from senior forward Alexa Kapetanakis. The Generals (5-2) were able to remain within one goal for the rest of the first half, thanks in large part to senior goalkeeper Stephanie McKnight (Frederick, Md./Frederick) who registered 11 saves during the match.

Wesleyan scored again just 1:30 into the second half. Kapetanakis scored on an assist from senior midfielder Betsy Jones. Jones then tallied the final goal exactly 11 minutes later. On the day, Wesleyan outshot W&L 20-4.

The Generals return to action tomorrow against Methodist College. The game will be played at North Carolina Wesleyan at 3:00 pm.

W&L WOMEN'S SOCCER POSTS A 2-0 WIN AT EASTERN MENNONITE

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team improved its record to 5-1 overall, 4-0 ODAC, with a 2-0 victory at Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday afternoon.

The Generals took a 1-0 lead with 43:30 gone-by as senior defender Ansley Miller (Athens, Ga./Athens Academy) scored off an assist from junior forward Amanda McDermott (The Woodlands, Texas/Cooper).

W&L then tallied the final goal of the contest at the 64:30 mark as junior midfielder Margaret-Hunter Turner (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) took an assist from sophomore midfielder Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia) and beat EMU goalkeeper Tara Froese.

Senior Stephanie McKnight (Frederick, Md./Frederick), junior Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill), and sophomore Kate Mobley (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) combined for the shutout in goal for the Generals.

W&L oushot the Royals (1-5, 0-4) in the contest by an 18-7 count.

W&L will return to action on Saturday as it travels to North Carolina Wesleyan for a 12:00 pm contest.

W&L DEFEATS RMWC, 4-1, IN WOMEN'S SOCCER

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team outshot Randolph-Macon Woman's College 35-1 en route to a 4-1 victory Sunday in Lexington.

W&L (4-1, 3-0 ODAC) scored its first goal just 2:05 into the match. Freshman midfielder Ruth-Hill Yeilding (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) tallied the goal when she intercepted a goal kick and chipped the ball over the outstretched arms of RMWC (2-3, 1-2 ODAC) goalkeeper Jessica Maddox. The Generals later scored the game winner on a free kick by junior midfielder Shana Levine (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) from 40 yards out at the 31:45 mark.

The Generals' final two goals were scored by freshman midfielder Jenny Thomas (High Point, N.C./Central) and junior midfielder Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia).

Washington and Lee will return to action on Tuesday, September 22, against Eastern Mennonite. Gametime is set for 4:00 pm in Harrisonburg.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team overpowered Virginia Wesleyan by a score of 2-0 for its third straight victory.

W&L (3-1, 2-0 ODAC) scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half. Liz Olson, (Brookfield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) tallied the game-winner for W&L with 47:20 gone in the match. The Generals then proceeded to increase their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Shana Levine (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) just 2:40 later.

For the match, W&L outshot the Blue Marlins by a count of 14-6. Stephanie McKnight (Frederick, Md./Frederick) recorded a shutout in goal for the Generals, tallying five saves.

Washington and Lee will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, September 19, against Randolph-Macon Woman's College. Gametime is set for 2:00 pm in Lexington.

GENERALS OVERPOWER HOLLINS, 8-1

ROANOKE, Va.. -- The Washington and Lee Women's Soccer Team improved to 2-1 on the season with an 8-1 victory over Hollins University (1-2) on Thursday afternoon in Roanoke.

Sophomore midfielder Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia) and junior forward Amanda McDermott (The Woodlands, Texas/Cooper) led the Generals with two goals apiece. The other Generals' goals were scored by freshman midfielder Ruth Hill Yeilding (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), junior midfielder Liz Olson (Brookfield Conn./Loomis-Chaffee), junior defender Samantha Garbisch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), and freshman midfielder Jenny Thomas (High Point, N.C./Central). Thomas' goal was her first ever in a Generals uniform while Yeilding's was the second of her career. Splitting playing time in goal for the Generals were Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill), Stephanie McKnight (Frederick, Md./Frederick), and Kate Mobley (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy).

W&L returns to action Saturday against Virginia Wesleyan in Lexington. Gametime is set for 11:00 am.

W&L WOMEN'S SOCCER REBOUNDS AGAINST HORNETS

LEXINGTON, Va.. -- The Washington and Lee Women's Soccer Team rebounded from a season opening loss to Emory with a 7-0 win over Shenandoah (1-3) on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore midfielder Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia) and junior midfielder Lindsay Williams (Atlanta, Ga./Phillips Academy (Mass)) led the Generals (1-1) with two goals apiece.

W&L jumped ahead early with a goal from junior forward Margaret-Hunter Turner (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) just 13:40 into the match. Williams then stepped into the spotlight scoring in the 23rd minute and then again in the 36th minute to propel the Generals to a 3-0 halftime lead. Bidwell opened the second half with her two goals in a span of just a minute and a half.

With the Generals leading 5-0 midway through the second half, freshman forward Ruth Hill Yeilding (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) laced a shot past Shenandoah goalkeeper Nicole Leisinger for her first collegiate goal. Junior midfielder Courtney Nolan (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) rounded out the scoring with a shot from about 30 yards out with 25 minutes remaining. The Generals outshot the Hornets 17-3. Senior forward Ansley Miller (Athens, Ga./Athens Academy) collected assists on each of Bidwell's goals. Turner also added two assists.

The Generals return to action Thursday against Hollins University in Roanoke. Hollins will be W&L's first ODAC opponent of the season. Gametime is set for 4:00 pm.

W&L WOMEN FALL TO EMORY 3-0, IN SOCCER

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team lost its season opener this afternoon to Emory University 3-0.

Emory (3-0-1) controlled the tempo throughout the contest and outshot the Generals (0-1) 23 to four. Washington and LeeÕs goaltenders stopped the Eagles on numerous scoring opportunites and kept the Generals in the contest. Senior Stephanie McKnight (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and junior Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) kept the game tied through the gameÕs 75th minute. Harris and McKnight combined to make 17 saves for the Generals.

W&L, however, could not hold off the Eagles late in the second half. Emory scored three goals in a span of less than two minutes to take a 3-0 lead and clinch the victory. The first of the three goals was tallied by Megan Connolly in the 78th minute. The second goal came just a minute later on a shot by Sarah Fairchild. Fairchild then netted the clincher with less than 10 minutes remaining in the match.

W&L endured another major loss Saturday, losing senior captain Deirdre Coyle (Belle Meade, NJ./Montgomery) for the season when she broke her leg just five minutes into the game.

The Generals will look to regroup against Shenandoah University at the Liberty Hall Fields on Sunday, September 12 at 2:30 PM.
