GRANVILLE, Ohio – The 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team dropped its second game in as many days, falling to Denison by a score of 1-0 on Sunday at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
The Big Red (2-1-2) didn't take long to grab an early advantage as senior defender Allison Vilsack ripped a shot from 25-yard out that sailed over the head of W&L sophomore goalkeeper Leeann Passaro (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / The Lawrenceville School) and into the back of the net just 8:54 into the game.
The Generals (1-2) threatened several times before the end of the first half, but couldn't beat Denison senior goalkeeper Jenny Herold, who had three stops in the opening 45 minutes.
Denison had a golden opportunity to assume a 2-0 lead just under 10 minutes into the second half when a penalty kick was awarded following a foul on the Generals. However, Passaro turned away a shot by DU first-year defender Kelly O'Neill to keep W&L within one score. From there, the Blue & White simply couldn't come up with the equalizer and the Big Red walked away with the home win.
Denison finished with a 10-9 edge in shots and took four corners, as opposed to three for the Generals. Passaro finished with five saves and Herold notched four stops.
Washington and Lee will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts York (Pa.) for a 3:00 pm contest.
