LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior forward Tricia Jessee (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) scored a pair of goals to lift the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Birmingham Southern on Sunday afternoon in the W&L Classic held at Watt Field.
The Generals (2-2) scored all three goals in the first half of action and Jessee got things started in the 10th minute when she took a through ball in the box from sophomore midfielder Danielle Spickard (Valencia, Calif. / William S. Hart) and slipped a shot past BSC (3-3) senior goalkeeper Ansley Tomlin.
Sophomore forward Caroline Peters (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin School) then found Jessee with a cross deep into the box in the 21st minute, and Jessee placed a shot just inside the near post for a 2-0 lead.
First-year defender Emily Roche' (Ashburn, Va. / Broad Run) capped the scoring at the 33:52 mark when she beautifully lofted a shot over the goalie into the far left corner of the goal from 35 yards out.
W&L substituted rather liberally in the second half and cruised to the win. For the game, the Generals out-shot the Panthers, 27-2, and held an 8-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Sophomore Maggie Nolan (Flanders, N.J. / Mount Olive) played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save to earn her first shutout of the season for W&L. Tomlin played the first 38:49 in goal for BSC and posted two saves with three goals allowed. She was spelled by first-year goalkeeper Libby Groark, who played the final 51:11, making four stops.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to York (Pa.) for a 1:00 pm contest.
