W&L Women's Soccer Draws 0-0 Tie With No. 9 Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Washington and Lee first-year goalkeeper Addie Healy (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove) stopped eight shots on goal to hold off Lynchburg scoring, as the Washington and Lee women's soccer team drew even, 0-0, with the No. 9 Hornets on Sunday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.

Both teams struggled to find opportunities to score in the first half, with LC just barely edging W&L in a 5-4 shot count. Between the 36th and 37th minute of the contest, the Generals had two close attempts on goal. At 35:51, sophomore forward Katie Rossi (Wyoming, Del./Caesar Rodney) notched a shot, but was stopped by LC goalkeeper Audrey Moore. Less than a minute later, sophomore midfielder Haley Ward (Federal Way, Wash./Federal Way) set up a corner kick and sent the ball into the feet of senior defender Alex Todd (New Orleans, La./Isidore Newman School), who's attempt was blocked by Lynchburg.

The Hornets brought more aggression in the second half by taking an advantage in both number of shots (10-4) and corner kicks (7-2). LC's best chance to score came in the 56th minute when a shot by Nikki Rhodes was blocked and sent out past the end line, resulting in a Lynchburg corner kick. Rhodes took the corner, but the play went stale. Rhodes found her way back into the offense to try for a header at 55:57, only to have it saved by the Generals. Healy met four shots during the second 45:00 and was able to keep the score at 0-0 with the saves to send the game into overtime.

In extra sessions, W&L and LC saw some shots on goal, but could not capitalize as the contest ended with the 0-0 draw.

W&L is now 6-2-1 (4-1-1 ODAC) on the season, while Lynchburg is 9-0-2 (3-0-2 ODAC) overall.

For the game, the Hornets outshot the Generals by a margin of 19-10.

Healy spent the entire game in goal for the Blue and White, tallying eight saves. Moore collected three saves in the 110:00 of action.

W&L returns to action on Wednesday, when it travels to Roanoke for a 7:00 pm contest.
