SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team was upended by Sewanee, 1-0, on Day One of The University of the South Tournament, hosted by Sewanee, Saturday evening.
The Tigers' winning goal came from sophomore midfielder Bess Goodman off an assist by senior defender Sam Hutton in the 33rd minute to put Sewanee up, 1-0. Sophomore midfielder Haley Ward (Federal Way, Wash./Federal Way) tried to even the game with a shot at 37:56, but with the attempt going wide, the Tigers' went into the intermission with the one-goal advantage.
W&L continued to fight back in the second half, notching six shots in the period by six different players. The increased pressure on the net was not enough for the Generals, as Sewanee walked away with the victory.
With the win, the Tigers are now 2-1 on the season and W&L falls to a 1-1 overall record.
For the game, the Generals finished ahead in both shots (11-9) and corner kicks (5-2).
First-year Addie Healy (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove) was in goal for the Blue and White, stopping two shots and recording one goal-against.
In net for the Tigers was sophomore Meagan Poole, who tallied four saves in 90:00.
The Generals return to action on Sunday, when they play Rhodes on Day Two of The University of the South Tournament for a 1:00 pm contest.
