W&L Women's Soccer Felled by Virginia Wesleyan, 2-0
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan forward Christina Fernandez finished with a goal and an assist as the Marlins topped the Washington and Lee women's soccer team, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Foster Field.
VWC (13-1, 6-1 ODAC) struck in the 31st minute, as Fernandez collected a pass from classmate Jessica Edelman to put the Marlins up, 1-0, a lead which they took into the break.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Fernandez set up fellow forward Breanne Ingargiola for a goal that slid past W&L senior keeper Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) for the final 2-0 margin.
VWC led the Generals (9-2-2, 5-1-2 ODAC) in both shots, 19-12, and corner kicks, 5-3, for the contest. First-year forward Madeline Forrestel (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) paced W&L with three shots.
Leary played all 90:00 in net, allowing two goals while stopping six shots. Erica Keil played the entirety for the Marlins, recording four saves.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, facing Randolph-Macon at noon. The team will honor its eight seniors before the contest.
