Leary Comes Up Big as Women's Soccer Earns 0-0 Draw with LC

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee senior keeper Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) made a crucial save on a penalty kick by Lynchburg College midfielder Brittany Klippstein (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) in the 109th minute as the two squads played to a 0-0 double overtime draw on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

After a Lynchburg player was taken down on the edge of the Generals' box, the Hornets were awarded a penalty kick with just over one minute remaining in the second overtime session. Klippstein took the kick for LC, but Leary made the diving save to her left to preserve the scoreless tie.

After a W&L (9-1-2, 5-0-2 ODAC) defender deflected the rebound off the penalty kick over the goal line, the Hornets took a corner kick with 40 seconds remaining. However, the Hornets (11-2-1, 6-0-1 ODAC) were unable to capitalize, ending the match in the 0-0 draw.

The first half of the contest proved to be evenly matched, as the shots were even at six apiece. However, the Generals held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks and nearly capitalized on one of those opportunities in the 31st minute, after junior defender Alex Todd (New Orleans, La./Isidore Newman School) headed the corner from senior defender Page Minton (Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green). The shot was blocked, forcing another W&L corner kick, but it was unable to capitalize.

The second stanza and first overtime saw a slight favor to the Hornets, which led the shot category by a margin of 8-2.

For the contest, LC led W&L in shots, 16-10, but the Generals owned a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Leary played the entire contest for W&L, recording four saves. LC senior Jackie Bader (Fort Washington, Md./Bishop Ireton) also played the entire contest, stopping three shots.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Virginia Wesleyan for a 3:30 pm contest.
