LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year forward Madeline Forrestel's (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) first collegiate goal also served as the game winner, as the Washington and Lee women's soccer team defeated Roanoke College, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
In a game that saw several tempo changes, the Generals (6-1-1, 3-0-1 ODAC) controlled the opening minutes of the match, outshooting the Maroons, 3-0. However, Roanoke (7-2-1, 3-1 ODAC) gained momentum midway through the opening stanza, with its best opportunity to score coming at the 33:08 mark when junior forward Rebekah Adams (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) sent a shot on goal, forcing W&L senior keeper Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) to make a save.
W&L found its stride in the closing minutes, as junior midfielder Ainsley Daigle (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) sent the ball towards the net, but RC first-year keeper Carolyn Sarbacher (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) made a leaping save, leaving the score at 0-0 going into the break. W&L outshot Roanoke, 7-2, in the first half, and also owned a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Generals' attack came on strong in the 61st minute, registering a sequence of shots by first-year midfielders Holley Beasley (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) and Katherine Rush (Cornelius, N.C./Providence Day School).
Forrestel then netted her game-winner in the 70th minute, as she stood near the back post to receive a cross from Beasley. Forrestel headed the ball past Sarbacher, giving W&L the 1-0 lead.
Roanoke had an opportunity to score in the final minute when it was awarded a free kick from just outside the box after a yellow card was given to W&L's Alexis Blight (Columbia, Md./McDonogh). Adam's free kick was deflected out by W&L senior defender Kat Lawson (White Post, Va./Clarke County), setting up a RC corner kick. However, the Maroons' initial shot was blocked, and Leary came up with a save off a shot by RC senior midfielder Lauren Schwarcz (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) as W&L earned the 1-0 victory to improve to 6-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in conference action.
Leary played all 90:00 for W&L, recording four saves. Sarabacher also played the duration for Roanoke, stopping four shots.
As a team, W&L outshot RC, 13-8, while the Maroons held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
W&L returns to action on Friday as it hosts Southern Virginia at 4:00 pm. The game is a makeup from September 6, when the match was rained out.
