W&L Women's Soccer Topped by Shenandoah, 1-0

LEXINGTON, Va. – Shenandoah junior midfielder Stormie Malik (Nokesville, Va./Liberty) broke a scoreless tie in the 63rd minute to lift the Hornets to a 1-0 victory over the Washington and Lee women's soccer squad on Sunday afternoon in the final contest of the W&L Invite at Watt Field.

The Generals (2-1) had several opportunities to score in the first half but were unable to capitalize, despite outshooting the Hornets (2-2), 8-2, and holding a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

A strong start to the second half, including shots by senior forwards Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) and Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) seemed to put momentum on the Generals' side, but key saves by SU keeper Kat Terza (Manassas, Va./Seton) quelled the offensive attack.

Setting-up the game-winning goal, Malik collected a deflected shot and pushed the ball past W&L senior keeper Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) to put the Hornets ahead, 1-0. The Generals had opportunities to score in the final minute, but Terza once again came up strong as SU held on for the victory.

For the match, W&L led SU in both shots (15-9) and corner kicks (6-3).

Leary played the entirety in net for W&L, recording five saves. Terza also played the duration for SU, stopping four shots.

The Generals return to action on Saturday as they open ODAC action, traveling to Guilford for a 2:00 pm contest.
