W&L Women's Soccer Cruises to 5-0 Victory Over Averett

LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year midfielder Katherine Rush (Cornelius, N.C./Providence Day School) scored two goals to help lead the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Averett in its first game of the W&L Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

W&L (2-0) struck quickly, as Rush netted an unassisted marker at the 2:05 mark. After 10 scoreless minutes, first-year midfielder Emily Scott (Port Murray, N.J./West Morris Central) collected a cross from senior midfielder Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), giving the Generals a 2-0 advantage in the 13th minute, a lead they would take into the break.

Espina sparked the Generals' scoring in the second half with an unassisted marker in the 58th minute, and Rush added her second goal of the contest off a pass from junior midfielder Ainsley Daigle (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) just over three minutes later to push the W&L lead to 4-0. First-year forward Julia Lancaster (Atlanta, Ga./Atlanta International) netted her first collegiate goal at the 88:21 mark, securing the 5-0 victory.

As a team, the Generals led the Cougars (1-1) in shots (17-6) and corner kicks (4-3).

In net, senior Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) played all 90:00, recording two saves. Averett's Malin Borjesson (Stenungsund, Sweden/Aspero Idrottgymnasium) also played the duration, tallying three saves.

The Generals return to action on Sunday as they face Shennandoah in their second game of the W&L Invitational at 2:30 pm.
