W&L Women's Soccer Strikes Early for a 7-0 Win Over N.C. Wesleyan

LEXINGTON, Va. – Four different W&L first-year players registered their first collegiate goals as the women's soccer team defeated N.C. Wesleyan, 7-0, on Thursday afternoon at Watt Field.

After a one-hour rain delay, the Generals (1-0) attacked early, holding a 6-1 advantage in shots over the Battling Bishops (0-1) in the opening minutes of the contest. The goals then came in bunches, as first-year midfielder Katie Rossi (Wyoming, Del./Caesar Rodney) netted her first collegiate goal in the 10th minute. Just over a minute later, classmate midfielder Holley Beasley (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) connected on a cross from senior defender Page Minton (Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) to give W&L a 2-0 edge at the 11:10 mark.

The first-year scoring assault continued just under the midway point of the first half, as midfielder Katherine Rush (Cornelius, N.C./Providence Day School) headed the ball into the net off a cross from classmate midfielder Emily Scott (Port Murray, N.J./West Morris Central) with 19:32 showing on the clock. Rush repaid the favor three minutes later, as she fed a ball to Scott for a goal, giving the Generals a commanding 4-0 lead with 22:38 remaining in the opening stanza.

Another quick goal from senior midfielder Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) 27 seconds later put W&L up, 5-0, in the 23rd minute, a lead it would take into the break.

The Generals added one goal each from Espina and Rush in the second half, as they secured the final 7-0 margin for their first win of the 2011 campaign.

W&L outshot N.C. Wesleyan, 37-2, and also held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks for the contest.

In net, senior Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) played the entirety and did not face a shot. NCW first-year keeper Johanna Wallinder (Nykoping, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) also played the duration, recording 13 saves.
