W&L Women's Soccer Holds on for 1-0 Victory over Methodist

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior midfielder Taylor Garrett (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) recorded her first goal of the season as the Washington and Lee women's soccer team held on for a 1-0 victory over Methodist University on Sunday afternoon at Watt Field.

Neither team was able to find the net in the first half, with the Generals (1-1) holding a 4-0 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

The game remained scoreless through most of the second half, until Garrett notched her goal off a cross from junior forward Anne Masich (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) in the 79th minute to secure the win.

W&L led the Monarchs (4-1) in both shots, 15-1, and corner kicks, 14-2, for the match.

Junior goalie Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) played all 90:00 in net for the Generals and did not face a shot. Senior netminder Kasey Nichols also played the duration for the Monarchs, allowing one goal while recording seven saves.

The Generals return to action on Saturday as they host Guilford in their ODAC season-opener. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
