W&L Women's Soccer Slips Past Transylvania, 1-0
LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year forward Ainsley Daigle (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) scored unassisted in the 88th minute to give the 24th-ranked Washington and Lee women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over Transylvania on Monday afternoon at Watt Field.
The two teams played scoreless until Daigle intercepted the ball from a Transylvania defender in the box and beat Pioneer sophomore goalkeeper Kara Hansel (Florence, Ky./Notre Dame) from six yards out at the 87:45 mark.
W&L (11-1-1) held advantages in shots (15-8) and corner kicks (6-4) in producing its seventh-straight shutout and 11th of the season. Sophomore Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) played all 90 minutes in goal and notched two saves.
Junior Cori Hickman (Newark, Ohio/Newark) started and played the initial 68:36 in goal for Transylvania (9-5-1), making five saves. Hansel played the final 21:24, making one save and allowing the game-winning tally.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Emory & Henry for a 6:00 pm contest.
