Two W&L Student-Athletes Honored With Weekly Award
SALEM, Va. – Washington and Lee had a pair of
student-athletes earn Athlete of the Week honors from the Old
Dominion Athletic Conference on Monday afternoon.
Sophomore women’s soccer player Allie Espina (Gaithersburg,
Md./Good Counsel) and sophomore women’s swimmer Elizabeth
Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep) were honored for the week
ending Nov. 1.
A forward on the soccer team, Espina notched three goals over a
two-game stretch last week. She recorded the Generals’ only
goals in a 2-1 victory over Bridgewater on Wednesday and followed
that up with a goal in the ODAC quarterfinal match on Saturday
against Guilford, as the Generals advanced to the semifinals with a
2-0 victory. Espina currently leads the team in scoring, recording
24 points off 11 goals and two assists on the season.
Starnes posted two individual victories as the women’s swim
team defeated Transylvania, 150-110, on Saturday. She finished
first in the 200 free with a time of 2:02.35 while also taking the
500 free in 5:31.81.
The W&L women’s soccer team returns to action on
Wednesday when it hosts Lynchburg in the semifinals of the ODAC
Tournament at 2:00 pm. The women’s swim team will take to the
pool on Saturday as they travel to Randolph-Macon for a 2:00 pm
meet.
