LEXINGTON, Va.— A late second-half goal from sophomore
forward Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Good Counsel) helped the
Washington and Lee women’s soccer team top Lynchburg, 2-1, in
the semifinals of the ODAC tournament on Wednesday afternoon at
Lynchburg (14-3-3) struck first, when senior midfielder Ashley Hoath (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon) connected on a penalty kick in the 25th minute. The Generals (16-1-2) would respond just two minutes later, with senior midfielder Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) finding the back of the net off a helper from sophomore defender Kat Lawson (White Post, Va./Clarke County) to tie the game at 1-1 in the 27th minute.
The game would remain tied until late in the second half, when Espina recorded the game-winning goal off an assist from first-year midfielder Katie Howard (Atherton, Calif./Menlo School) in the 88th minute to advance the Generals to the finals of the ODAC women's soccer tournament for the first time since 2004.
Sophomore goalie Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) played all 90:00 in net for the Generals, allowing one goal while recording six saves. Lynchburg junior goalie Anna Wright (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) also played the duration, allowing two goals and notching five saves.
The Generals will return to action on Saturday in the ODAC women’s soccer tournament final. They will face the winner of the Virginia Wesleyan/Roanoke match, with time and location TBA.
