W&L Women's Soccer Defeats Sweet Briar, 10-0

LEXINGTON, Va.-Three first-year Generals recorded their first collegiate goals as the Washington and Lee women’s soccer team defeated Sweet Briar, 10-0, at Watt Field on Wednesday evening.

First-year midfielders Ainsley Daigle (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana), Hannah Sackfield (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) and Katie Howard (Atherton, Calif./Menlo School) all recorded their first collegiate goals in the match, including two by Sackfield. Daigle recorded her goal in the 10th minute of the match off an assist from senior midfielder Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy). Sackfield would find the net in the second half, scoring back-to-back goals in the 53rd and 61st minutes. She received a helper on her first goal from sophomore forward Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park). Howard would record her unassisted marker in the 81st minute.

Sophomore forward Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) recorded two goals in the match, with the first one coming in the 8th minute and the second off a helper from junior midfielder Laura Yungmeyer (Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns Bennett) in the 53rd minute.

Washington and Lee (3-0, 1-0 ODAC) sophomore Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) and junior Taylor Joosten (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius College Prep) split time in the net, with Leary receiving the shutout victory. Sweet Briar (2-4, 0-2 ODAC) first-year Caitlin Dennis-Devries (Thetford, Vt./Thetford) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Vixens, allowing 10 goals and recording five saves.

The Generals will stay home to face the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins on Saturday with a start time of 3:00 pm.
