Lynchburg Knocks Off Catholic, 5-1, in NCAA 1st Round
LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior forward Betsy Kwiatkowski (Mount
Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) scored a pair of goals to lead
Lynchburg College to a 5-1 victory over Catholic University in the
opening round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer
Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Hornets (15-3-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 10:12 into the
game when sophomore midfielder Joanie Snyder (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air)
found the net unassisted. LC upped its advantage to 2-0 in the 18th
minute when Kwiatkowski scored unassisted, but the Cardinals
(17-3-1) sliced it to a 2-1 game in the 20th minute when first-year
forward Courtney Orgill (Wall, N.J./Wall) slipped a shot past LC
junior netminder Anna Wright (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry).
Lynchburg scored two more tallies before the end of the half and
Kwiatkowski scored her second goal in the 49th minute for the 5-1
final score.
The Hornets held advantages of 16-7 in shots and 7-2 in corner
kicks. Wright played all 90 minutes in goal for the Hornets and
posted two saves.
Senior Tere Rossi (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) and sophomore
Christina Cassidy (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks West) both played a
half in goal for the Cardinals. Rossi notched one save in the
opening 45 minutes, while Cassidy logged one save in the final 45
minutes.
Lynchburg advances to the second round on Sunday, when it will face
Washington and Lee for a 1:00 pm contest.
