W&L WRESTLING FINISHES EIGHTH AT CENTENNIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished eighth out of eight teams at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon at Johns Hopkins University.

Ursinus College claimed the title with 98.5 points, followed by McDaniel (68), Muhlenberg (67.5), Johns Hopkins (55), Gettysburg (36.5), Stevens Tech (34), King’s Point (30.5) and W&L (14).

The Generals were paced by freshman heavyweight John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), who finished third overall. Christopher was pinned by McDaniel’s Keith English (2:45) in the opening match, but recovered to defeated Chris Swensen of Muhlenberg (6-0) and John Brunetti of King’s Point (7-2), setting up a rematch with English in the third place match. This time, Christopher knocked off English by pinning him in 3:30.

Freshman Tom Hosford (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) was the only other General to place, finishing fourth at 125 pounds. Hosford was pinned by Michael Sumner of Johns Hopkins (2:30) in his opening match then received a pair of byes to the third place match where he fell to Mike Tenenhaus of Muhlenberg, 7-1.

The Generals’ season is now complete. W&L finished with a 5-5 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the Centennial Conference.

W&L WRESTLING FALLS TO MUHLENBERG AND URSINUS

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team dropped a pair of Centennial Conference matches at the Muhlenberg College Triangular on Saturday afternoon. The Generals fell to the host Mules, 27-9, then dropped a 43-3 decision to Ursinus College.

In the loss to Muhlenberg (8-5, 6-2), sophomore Jesse Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh), junior Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./LaSalle College) and freshman John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) all picked up victories. Sataloff defeated John Hesse (4-2) at 174 pounds, Courtney downed Matt Horn (6-2) at 184 pounds, and Christopher notched a 4-1 win over Chris Swensen at heavyweight.

Against Ursinus (15-1-1, 5-0), Christopher picked up the Generals’ lone victory with a 10-8 decision over Matt Williams at heavyweight.

Washington and Lee (5-5, 3-4) will return to action next Saturday as it competes in the Centennial Conference Championships held at Johns Hopkins. The event begins at 10:00 am.

W&L WRESTLING FALLS TO JOHNS HOPKINS, 22-12

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team lost to Centennial conference rival Johns Hopkins, 22-12, on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore, Md.

The Generals (5-3, 3-2) won the 125, 133 and 165 pound weight classes.

Freshman Tom Hosford (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) won at 125 pounds with a 6-0 win over Mike Sumner, while sophomore David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) was victorious at 133 pounds with a 2-1 decision over Jimmy Van Daniker.

Sophomore Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) captured the 165-pound weight class by pinning Mike Vecchiolo in 1:59.

Johns Hopkins improved to 6-7 overall (3-2 Centennial) with the victory.

W&L WRESTLING FINISHES THIRD AT APPRENTICE INVITATIONAL

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Junior Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./LaSalle College) won the 184-pound weight class and sophomore Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) captured the 149-pound weight class to help lead the Washington and Lee wrestling team to a third place finish out of six teams at the Apprenctice School Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va.

UNC-Pembroke took home the team title with 92 points, followed by Apprentice (77), Washington and Lee (69.5), Southern Virginia (27), University of Maryland-Baltimore County (12) and William and Mary (1.5).

Courtney, the top seed, knocked off UNCP’s Rex Ely 7-2 before defeating teammate, sophomore Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s), 5-0, in the championship match.

Lawrence, the top seed, defeated UMBC’s Mike Hornzell 8-5 before knocking off Jeff Becker, 7-6, in the final.

Freshman John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) went 2-1 to place second in the 285-pound weight class, while sophomore David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) also went 2-1 to finish third at 133 pounds.

Additionally, freshman Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) posted a 3-1 record to place third at 141 pounds.

W&L WRESTLING DEFEATS SOUTHERN VIRGINIA, 39-6

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team defeated Southern Virginia, 39-6, on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

W&L (5-2) won eight of the 10 matches, including one via pin. Sophomore Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./LaSalle College) won his 184-pound match by pinning Andrew Henderson in 4:24.

Sophomore Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher) won at 197 pounds with a 9-4 decision over Joshua Squires, while classmate Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) defeated Bradon Reynolds (6-0) at 174 pounds.

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team went 2-1 against three Centennial Conference opponents at the McDaniel Quadrangular on Saturday afternoon in Westminster, Md. The Generals defeated Stevens Tech 28-20 and Kings Point 28-9, but lost to McDaniel, 24-15.

W&L (4-2, 3-1) was led by freshman John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), who went 3-0 at 285 pounds. He pinned Will Young of Stevens Tech in 3:42 before defeating Kings Point’s John Brunetti, 11-3, and McDaniel’s Ryan Dieter, 9-6.

W&L WRESTLING WINS WASHINGTON AND LEE INVITATIONAL

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore Jesse Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) won the 174-pound weight class and freshman John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) captured the 285-pound weight class to help lead the Washington and Lee wrestling team place first out of seven teams at the W&L Wrestling Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.

The Generals took home the team title with 77 points, followed by the University of Scranton (50.5), Maryville College (49), Washington and Jefferson University (40.5), Virginia Military Institute (37.5), Cumberland University (29.5) and Southern Virginia University (16).

Sataloff, the top seed, defeated Washington and Jefferson’s Pat Wilson, 7-1, in the semifinals and pinned Joe Gunter of Maryville in 2:03 to claim the title. Christopher, the number two seed, posted a 3-0 record en route to the championship. He knocked off Southern Virginia’s Joshua Bake 4-1 and Cumberland’s Jake Sheffield 8-4, before defeating Mitch Tenney of Washington and Jefferson, 8-4, in the final.

The other weight class champions were Santana Adame of Cumberland (125 pounds), Xavier Gomez of Cumberland (133 pounds), Jochen Granja of VMI (141 pounds), Donell Young of Scranton (149 pounds), Tim Simansky of Scranton (157 pounds), Donnie Floyd of Maryville (165 pounds), Joe Driggers of Maryville (184 pounds) and Ryan Wiles of Washington and Jefferson (197 pounds). Donnie Floyd was named the most outstanding wrestler.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team went 2-1 at the W&L Quadrangular on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center. The Generals defeated Centennial-rival Gettysburg 34-16 and Waynesburg 43-9, but lost to Wilkes 22-12.

W&L (2-1, 1-0) was led by sophomore Jesse Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh), who went 3-0 at the 174-pound weight class. He defeated Gettysburg’s James Stevenson, 12-4 and Waynesburg’s Tyler Allen, 7-2, before downing Bill Bleiler of Wilkes, 14-7.

Sophomore David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) and sophomore Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) also went 3-0 with one of the wins coming via forfeit. Shubick, competing at 133 pounds, beat Waynesburg’s James Weishaar 14-6 and Ken Nagle of Wilkes 10-8. Boniello wrestled at 165 pounds, knocking off Gettysburg’s Josh Kaplan, 4-1, and D.J. Giancola of Wilkes, 9-3.

W&L WRESTLING PLACES SEVENTH AT SCRANTON INVITATIONAL

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished seventh out of nine teams at the Scranton Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

The College of New Jersey won the invitational with 168 points and was followed by McDaniel (139), Stevens Tech (85), King’s College (69.5), Lycoming (56), University of Scranton (53.5), W&L (44), Centenary (35.5) and Elizabethtown (17).

The Generals were led by sophomore Jesup Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and junior Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./LaSalle College), who finished fourth in the 174-pound and 184-pound weight class, respectively.

Sataloff pinned Mike Mariano of King’s College in 3:21 and then lost to Greg Osgoodby of The College of New Jersey, 5-0. Sataloff recovered to defeat Stevens Tech’s Colin McAuliffe, 22-5, but fell 3-2 to Centenary’s Seth Wisner in the third place match.

Courtney defeated Mike O’Hara of King’s College 6-5 before falling 6-0 to Pat Cross of the College of New Jersey. Courtney then won a 2-1 decision over Stevens Tech’s Pasquale Perrone, but lost to McDaniel’s Cory Beall 1-0 in the third place match.

The Generals return to the mat on Sat., Jan 7 as it hosts the W&L Quadrangular against Waynesburg College, Gettysburg College and Wilkes University. The meet begins at 11:00 am.

W&L WRESTLING COMPETES AT URSINUS INVITATIONAL

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team competed at the Ursinus Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals were led by sophomore Jesup Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and freshman John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) who each went 3-1 to finish second in their weight class. Junior Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./LaSalle College) and sophomore Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) both went 2-2 and placed fourth in their weight class.

Sataloff, competing at 174 pounds, defeated Colin McAuliffe of Stevens Tech (12-5) and Muhlenberg’s Mike Horn (3-2) to advance to the semifinals. He then pinned Steve Johnson of York College in 1:50 before being pinned in 4:36 by Greg Osgoodby of The College of New Jersey in the finals.

Christopher wrestled at 285 pounds and knocked off Brett Jankos of The College of New Jersey, 10-6, and York’s Rob Ragona, 5-3, to advance to the semifinals. He then defeated Princeton’s Kris Berr, 3-2, before dropping a 3-1 decision to Luke Panizzi of York in the finals.

Courtney, competing at 184 pounds, pinned Bucknell’s Tim Mauritz in 1:03 and defeated York’s Kevin Ruff, 10-4. He was then pinned in 48 seconds by Mike Troutman of Ursinus College in the semifinals and by Pat Cross of the College of New Jersey (3:28) in the third place match.

Lawrence wrestled at 149 pounds and knocked off Princeton’s Matt Collins, 10-2, and Messiah’s Alex Broadwater, 9-6. He then lost 7-6 to Joe DeCampo of Muhlenberg in the semifinals and was pinned in 3:27 by Ken Laird of Waynesburg in the third place match.

The Generals return to the mat on Sun., Dec. 4 at the Scranton Invitational. The meet begins at 9:00 am.

W&L WRESTLING COMPETES AT SOUTHERN VIRGINIA OPEN

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team opened up its 2005-06 season at the Southern Virginia Open on Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista, Va. The Generals won seven of the eight weight classes.

Each of the following wrestlers posted a 2-0 record to win their weight class. Sophomore David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) won at 133 pounds, freshman Robert Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) captured the 141-pound weight class, sophomore Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) won at 149 pounds, sophomore Tim Manson (Lookout Mountain, Tenn./Baylor School) captured the 165-pound weight class, junior Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./LaSalle College) placed first at 184 pounds, sophomore Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) won at 197 pounds, and freshman John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) captured the 285-pound weight class.
