URSINUS WINS CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Ursinus captured six individual titles as the
Bears won the 2004 Centennial Conference (CC) Wrestling
Championships, hosted by Washington and Lee on Saturday at the
Warner Center.
Ursinus scored 109 points on the day to take top honors, while
McDaniel College (76) edged Johns Hopkins (72) for second place.
Gettysburg (55) took fourth, Muhlenberg (47.5) took fifth and
Washington and Lee (0) placed sixth.
Junior 157-pounder Scott Roesch (Ursinus) was named the 2003 Most
Outstanding Wrestler, while senior heavyweight Karol Gryczynski
(Johns Hopkins) earned the Chris Clifford Memorial Award for the
most career CC tournament points.
Senior 149-pounder Corey Little (Charlotte, N.C./Independence)
advanced to the consolation semi-finals for the Generals before
falling to eventual third-place finisher, junior Tom Fives
(Gettysburg), 4-2. Junior 165-pounder Walt Hoyt (Marietta,
Ga./George Walton) also advanced to the consolation semi-finals for
W&L before falling to eventual third-place finisher, Joe Selba
of Johns Hopkins (1:18).

W&L WRESTLING DROPS TWO DECISIONS AT MUHLENBERG
ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee
wrestling team dropped a pair of decisions in the Muhlenberg
Quadrangular on Saturday afternoon. The Generals fell to Centennial
Conference foe Muhlenberg, 54-0, before losing to Baptist Bible,
36-6, in non-conference action.
Following W&L’s (0-9, 0-5) losses to Muhlenberg and
Baptist Bible, the Generals scored a pair of wins in exhibition
against Elizabethtown. Senior 149-pounder Corey Little (Charlotte,
N.C./Independence) decisioned Rob Bozart, 11-4, while junior
165-pounder Walt Hoyt (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) pinned John
Garganta (1:20).
Washington and Lee will be back on the mat next Saturday when it
hosts to Centennial Conference Championships.

wrestling team dropped a pair of matches in the Albright tri-meet
on Saturday afternoon. The Generals fell to Centennial Conference
foe Johns Hopkins, 58-0, before losing to Albright, 39-3, in
non-conference action.
Senior 149-pounder Corey Little (Charlotte, N.C./Independence)
recorded W&L’s (0-6, 0-4) only dual-meet victory of the
day when he scored a 10-5 decision over Albright’s Brandon
Cuffee. Little also picked up a victory over Centenary College
grappler Isiah Harris. He won that bout with a 12-4 major
decision.
W&L will be back on the mat next Saturday at 12:00 noon when
it competes in the Muhlenberg Quadrangular.

W&L WRESTLING DROPS TWO MATCHES AT URSINUS QUAD
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team dropped a pair of matches in the Ursinus Quadrangular on Saturday afternoon. The Generals fell to Ursinus, 52-6, before losing to McDaniel, 42-12.
Freshman 184-pounder Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./La Salle College) went 2-0 on the day to lead W&L. He pinned Ursinus’ Matt Fralen then went on to pin McDaniel’s Nate Klunk.
Senior 149-pounder Corey Little (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) dropped both of his matches on the day as he was defeated 18-6 by Ursinus’ Mark Barber and was pinned by McDaniel’s Mark Nakasone. W&L also picked up a forfeit win at 157 pounds against the Green Terror.
The losses dropped W&L to 0-4 overall, 0-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Generals will be in action again on Wednesday as they travel to Southern Virginia for a 7:00 pm match.

W&L WRESTLING FINISHES SIXTH IN W&L
INVITATIONAL
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman Maxwell Courtney
(Jeffersonville, Pa./La Salle College) went 2-2 on the day and
finished fourth in the 184-pound weight class as the Washington and
Lee wrestling team finished sixth at the 2004 Washington and Lee
Invitational on Saturday in the Warner Center.
Davidson finished the day as team champion (96.5), followed by
Cumberland (74), Washington and Jefferson (60.5), Scranton (48),
Pensacola Christian (38) and W&L (5.5).
Courtney opened the day by pinning (2:31) Washington and
Jefferson’s Phil McCormick in the quarterfinals, but fell to
Donnie Scruggs (Cumberland), 17-6, in the semifinals. In the
consolation bracket Courtney defeated Patrick Scandling (Davidson)
with a 6-3 decision, but couldn’t hold on in the consolation
finals, falling to Trevor Needham (Scranton), 4-2.
The individual champions on the day were Davidson sophomore
Patrick Coman (Tulsa, Okla.) at 125, Davidson freshman Jim Avola
(Montague) at 133, Davidson sophomore Matt Leonard (Pompton Plains,
N.J.) at 141, Pensacola’s Steve McGettrick at 149, Davidson

W&L WRESTLING COMPETES IN DAVIDSON QUADRANGULAR
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee
wrestling squad fell to teams from Gettysburg (54-0), Davidson
(55-0) and Pensacola Christian College (36-3) on Friday at the
Davidson Quadrangular.
Freshman Maxwell Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./La Salle College),
wrestling at 184-pounds, recorded the Generals’ only victory
on the day, defeating Pensacola’s Bjorn Olson with an 8-1
decision.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sat., Jan. 17 as it hosts
its W&L Invitational. Wrestling begins at 10:00 a.m.

W&L WRESTLING COMPETES IN VMI KEYDET INVITATIONAL
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee
wrestling team opened its season by competing in the VMI Keydet
Invitational on Saturday at VMI’s Cocke Hall.
The Generals were led by freshmen Max Courtney (Jeffersonville,
Pa./La Salle College) and Moses Laffitte (Columbia,
S.C./Hammond).
Courtney, who finished 1-2 on the day in the 184-pound flight,
dropped his first match before notching a 2-1 decision over Matt
Sawyer of Carson-Newman. In his final appearance of the day,
Courtney fell to Old Dominion University’s Rob Valentine
(16-7).
Laffitte, who finished the day 1-2 in the 174-pound flight, opened
the invitational with a 5-2 decision over Chris Culp
(Carson-Newman). He ended the day with a loss by fall to both Aaron
Kerkof (VMI) and Chris Mandracchia (Duke).
The Generals will be back in action on Sat., Dec., 10 at the
Scranton Invitational. Action begins at 10:00 a.m.
