W&L WRESTLING COMPETES AT CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team claimed one runner-up finish and two third place finishers at the Centennial Conference Championships at Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon.

Overall, the Generals finshed sixth of six teams with 28 points. Western Maryland was crowned team champion with 106.5 points. It was followed by Muhlenberg (80.5), Ursinus (70.5), Gettysburg (39), Johns Hopkins (32) and W&L.

W&L senior 174-pounder Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick) finished as the runner-up in his weight class. After defeating Joe Getz of Muhlenberg, 9-1, in the semifinals, Zdanov lost to Andy Chencharik of Western Maryland, 7-6, in the finals. Zdanov finishes the season with a record of 20-7.

Senior 197-pounder Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) and sophomore 184-pounder Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) finished third in their respective weight classes.

After losing to Ursinus’ Travis Allred (2-1 in a tiebreaker) in the semifinals, Morse claimed two victories in the consolation round, including a pin, to finish third. Mueller defeated Mike Yuhaniak of Johns Hopkins, 8-0, in the quarterfinals, before falling to Mike Mergott of Ursinus, 8-6, in the semifinals. Like Morse, Mueller came back to claim two victories in the consolation round to finish in third place.

W&L concludes the 2001-02 season with an overall record of 3-7.

W&L WRESTLING SPLITS MATCHES IN W&L TRIANGULAR

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team split a pair of matches in the W&L triangular on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center. The Generals defeated Albright College, 37-15, before falling to Centennial Conference-foe Johns Hopkins, 24-16. In the other match, Johns Hopkins defeated Albright, 43-6.

The Generals (3-7, 0-5) were led by seniors Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) and Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick), who won both of their matches. Morse defeated Albright’s Ryan Scarduzio, 12-3, and Johns Hopkins’ Joe Selba, 10-2 at the 197-pound weight class. Zdanov, a 174-pounder, pinned Albright’s Todd Alscher in 3:57 then defeated the Blue Jays’ Mike Halchak, 8-2.

Sophomore 149-pounder Corey Little (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) won by forfeit against Albright (1-18) then defeated Reno Reitmayr of Johns Hopkins, 8-5. Freshman 157-pounder Brian Avello (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Cardinal Newman) and sophomore 184-pounder Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) both also posted forfeit wins against Albright then defeated their opponents from JHU (8-9). Avello knocked-off Glen Taylor, 16-14, while Mueller downed Mike Yuhaniak, 2-1.

Washington and Lee will be back in action on Saturday as it participates in the Centennial Conference Championships. Action is slated to begin at 10:00 am.

W&L WRESTLING COMPETES AT NEWPORT NEWS INVITATIONAL

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished third of nine teams at the Newport News Apprentice Invitational on Saturday.

UNC Pembroke won the overall title with 100.5 points. Apprentice finished second with 70.5 points, followed by the Generals who totaled 63.5 points.

Leading the way for W&L was senior 197-pounder Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) who notched his third tournament title of the season with a 4-0 decision over Eric Bartczak of Western Maryland in the finals. Senior 174-pounder Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick) also won his weight class with a pin in 5:39 over Joe Smith of UNC Pembroke.

Freshman 157-pounder Brian Avello (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Cardinal Newman) was pinned in 3:21 by Dwayne Coward of UNC Pembroke in the finals. Sophomore 184-pounder Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) also advanced to the finals, however, was defeated by Luciana Vera of UNC Pembroke, 6-3.

Junior 141-pounder John Polena (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) finished in fourth place as he was defeated by Greg Mortonson of Southern Virginia, 11-2, in the consolation finals.

W&L returns to action next Saturday when it hosts the W&L Triangular at 11:00 am.

W&L WRESTLING FALLS AT SOUTHERN VIRGINIA, 28-22

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team fell to 2-6 on the season as it was defeated by Southern Virginia, 28-22, on Wednesday evening.

Five Generals came away victorious in the match, including senior 174-pounder Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and sophomore 184-pounder Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) who each tallied pins. Zdanov pinned Jon Lindsey in 4:23, while Mueller picked up his pin against Allen McDonald in 2:39.

The meet also marked the return of senior 197-pounder Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater), who had been out since injuring his ankle over the Christmas holiday. Morse picked up a 9-1 victory over Andrew Coffman.

Also notching victories for the Generals were junior 165-pounder Alex Poor (Perkasie, Pa./Germantown-Academy), 5-2, and freshman 157-pounder Brian Avello (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Cardinal Newman), 23-20.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they compete in the Newport News Apprentice Invitational. Action is slated to begin at 8:00 am.

W&L WRESTLING DROPS A PAIR OF CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE MATCHES

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team fell to 0-4 in the Centennial Conference with a pair of losses in the W&L Triangular held Saturday afternoon. The Generals fell to Ursinus, 38-9, before dropping a 37-12 decision to Western Maryland. In the other match, Western Maryland defeated Ursinus, 21-19.

The Generals, 2-5 overall, were led by senior 174-pounder Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick), who won both of his matches. Against Ursinus, Zdanov pinned Sebastian Voltarelli in 1:39. He then downed Andy Chencharik of Western Maryland, 3-1.

Sophomore 184-pounder Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) picked up a win against Ursinus’ Travis Allred, 3-1, then fell to Dan Riggs of WMC, 13-7.

Freshman 157-pounder Brian Avello (Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) also split his matches, falling to Sean Howard of Ursinus, 9-1, before defeating French Pope of Western Maryland, 9-7.

W&L WRESTLING HOSTS OWN INVITATIONAL

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team was in action on Saturday as it hosted the 25th Annual Washington and Lee Wrestling Invitational Tournament at the Warner Center.

Sophomore 184-pounder Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) led the Generals with a second place finish. After defeating Adam Hicks of Pensacola Christian in the semifinals, 3-2, Mueller was defeated by Wes Kuteski of Washington and Jefferson, 5-3, in the finals.

Senior 174-pounder Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick) had a third place showing. Zdanov won his first match by pinning Chad Lasher of Pensacola Christian in 1:24. Zdanov was then defeated by Matt Smith of Washington and Jefferson, 11-8, before knocking off Jose Valdez of Scranton, 7-0, in the consolation finals.

The Generals (2-3, 0-2) will return to action next Saturday when they host the W&L Quadrangular. In addition to W&L, teams scheduled to participate include Gallaudet, Ursinus and Western Maryland. Action begins at 11:00 am.

W&L WRESTLING COMPETES IN THE URSINUS INVITATIONAL

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Senior Ivan Zadanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick) claimed second place in the 174-pound weight class to pace the Washington and Lee wrestling team at the Ursinus Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Zdanov defeated Sebastian Voltarelli of Ursinus, 6-0, before falling to Joe Fitzsimmons of Roger Williams, 9-2 in the finals.

Sophomore Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) placed third in the 184-pound bracket. Mueller defeated Mike McConnell of Lafayette, 6-5, then fell to Mike Megott of Ursinus, 8-4. He recovered to pin Trevor Richmond of Roger Williams in 3:30, before defeating Ben Therrian of Bridgewater State, 4-2.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts the W&L Invitational at 10:00 am.

W&L WRESTLING FALLS TO MUHLENBERG, 40-9

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team fell to 1-3 overall, 0-2 in the Centennial Conference as they were defeated by Muhlenberg, 40-9, on Wednesday evening at the Doremus Gymnasium.

The Generals were paced by senior 174-pounder Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and sophomore 184-pounder Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) who each posted victories.

Zdanov pinned his opponent, sophomore Shawn Zeplin (Ashland, Pa./North Schuylkill) in 4:40. For Zdanov, it was his team-leading third pin of the season. Mueller picked up an 11-4 victory over sophomore Bill Cummins (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley).

The victory improved Muhlenberg to 6-5 overall, 1-1 in the Centennial.

The Generals will return to action on Saturday as they will wrestle in the Ursinus Invitational. Action is slated to begin at 10:00 am.

In the opening match, the Generals were defeated by the host school, 24-22. Freshman 157-pounder Brian Avello (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Cardinal Newman) picked up a 9-4 decision over Daniel Natterman. Junior 165-pounder Alex Poor (Perkasie, Pa./Germantown Academy) and sophomore 184-pounder Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) were the only other W&L wrestlers to pick up a victory in action, as he notched a 12-4 decision over Mark McDonald.

Seniors Matt Jacobs (Hollis, N.H./Bishop Guertin) and Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick) each won by forfeit.

The Generals were then dealt a 43-3 defeat by Pensacola Christian. Poor was the only W&L wrestler to earn a victory as he won a 9-5 decision over Joel Porcher.

W&L also earned a 24-15 victory over Division I Davidson. However, the victory was unofficial as Davidson did not have enough wrestlers.

W&L will return to action on Wednesday as it hosts Muhlenberg College at 6:00 pm.

W&L WRESTLING DEFEATS SOUTHERN VIRGINIA, 34-15

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team lost its first two matches of the evening before cruising to a 34-15 victory over Southern Virginia at the Warner Center on Wednesday evening.

The Generals won a total of seven matches on the evening. Leading the way for W&L were senior 197-pounder Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) and senior 174-pounder Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick) who each picked up victories with pins. Morse pinned Allen MacDonald in two minutes, while Zdanov pinned David Gilliatt in 28 seconds.

The victory improved Morse to a perfect 7-0 on the season. Zdanov picked up victory number five against just three losses.

Sophomore 149-pounder Corey Little (Charlotte, N.C./Independence), freshman 157-pounder Brian Avello (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Cardinal Newman), and sophomore 165-pounder Alex Poor (Perkasie, Pa./Germantown Academy) all notched victories over their opponents.

Senior 125-pounder Ben Segal (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) and sophomore 184-pounder Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) both picked up forfeit wins.

The victory moves the Generals to 1-0 on the season, while the Knights fall to 2-4.

W&L will return to action on Jan. 5, 2002, when it competes in the Gettysburg Quadrangular.

W&L FINISHES FOURTH AT SCRANTON INVITATIONAL

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished fourth out of 11 teams with 47.5 points at the Scranton Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Kings won the tournament with 134 points, followed by Lycoming (69.5 points) and the College of New Jersey (68.5 points).

W&L senior Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) won the championship of the 197-pound weight class defeating Tegan McKee of Kings in the finals, 4-3. Morse also defeated Luke Rosenberger of Baptist Bible, 13-2, and Glenn Zimmermann of Kings, 1-0.

Sophomore 184-pounder Joseph Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) and senior 174-pounder Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick) each finished as runner-up in their respective weight classes.

Mueller defeated Bill Brennen of Albright, on a technical fall and Keith Kubicek of TCNJ, 6-4, before falling to Dale Rismiller of TCNJ, 13-9, in the finals. Zdanov picked up a victory over Ty Edwards of Albright with a fall and Nate Jones of Lycoming with an 8-3 decision. Zdanov then lost to Joe Amone of Kings, 5-4, in the finals.

W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Southern Virginia at 7:30 pm.

W&L WRESTLING COMPETES IN VMI INVITATIONAL

LEXINGTON, Va. -- W&L senior Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) took the championship of the 197-pound weight class at the VMI Keydet Wrestling Invitational on Sunday in Lexington. For Morse, it was his third consecutive championship at the 197-pound weight class at the VMI Invitational.

Morse began the day with a 7-2 win over Tim Gutierrez of Anderson. He then defeated Mike Yetter of Old Dominion, 4-0, in the semifinals and Matt Bishop of Cumberland, 3-2, in the finals.

Sophomore Joseph Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) took home a fourth place finish in the 184-pound weight class. Mueller fell to Josh Muncy of Cumberland in the consolation finals. Senior Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick) picked up two victories on the day at 174-pounds as he defeated Chris Wilkes of Cumberland, 7-3, in the opening round and teammate Jason Smee (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) in the consolation round. Zdanov finished the day with a record of 2-2.

The Generals return to action on December 1 when they travel to Scranton, Pa., to participate in the Scranton Tournament.
