MUELLER LOSES IN CONSOLATION QUARTERFINALS AT NCAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS (3/3)

WATERLOO, Iowa. --Washington and Lee 184-pound freshman Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) was pinned by seventh-seeded Jason Schlingman of King's College (Pa.) at the 2:25 mark in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Waterloo, Iowa, on Saturday afternoon.

Mueller was disqualified in his first match of the tournament yesterday afternoon and ends his season with a 8-15 overall record.

 

MUELLER FALLS AT NCAA DIVISION III WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS (3/2)

WATERLOO, Iowa. --Washington and Lee 184-pound freshman Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) was disqualified in his first round matchup against fifth-seeded Andy Kazik of Lawrence University at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa, on Friday afternoon.

Mueller received a bye in the quarterfinal round of the consolation bracket and will face the winner of the Wesley Koteski (Washington & Jefferson)-Nick Hansen (SUNY-Brockport) match tomorrow morning at 11:00 am in the consolation semifinals.

Koteski was pinned by the tournament's top-seed, Jeremy Miller of Wisconsin-Lacrosse in the first round, while Hansen was defeated by the eighth-seed, Wartburg's Sonny Alvarez, 20-8 in round one.

 

W&L FINISHES SIXTH AT CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS (2/17)

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Freshman 184-pounder Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) became the first Washington and Lee wrestler to win a Centennial Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Centennial Conference Championships in Gettysburg, Pa. W&L finished sixth out of six teams at the invitational with 39.5 points.

Mueller defeated second-seeded Aaron Moak of Johns Hopkins, 9-4, in the semifinals, before winning the title with an 11-6 decision over top-seeded Morgan Douglas of Gettysburg.

Junior Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) placed second in the 197-pound weight class. He defeated Travis Allred of Ursinus in the semifinals, 15-2. However, Western Maryland's Chris McNally claimed the title with a 5-3 decision in the championship match. Morse finishes his season with a record of 20-3 overall.

Senior 149-pounder Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) and junior 125-pounder Ben Segal (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) also finished third in their respective weight classes.

Western Maryland captured the team championship, finishing with 84 points, while Muhlenberg was second with 80 points.

Mueller will now move on to the NCAA Division III Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa, on March 1 and 2.

W&L SWEEPS A PAIR OF MATCHES AT ALBRIGHT TRIANGULAR (2/10)

READING, Pa. --Washington and Lee swept a pair of matches at the Albright Triangular in wrestling action on Saturday afternoon in Reading, Pa. The Generals picked up a Centennial Conference victory with a 34-7 triumph over Johns Hopkins and then defeated host Albright, 22-21, in a non-conference match.

Washington and Lee finished the regular season with a 6-5-1 overall record, 2-3 in the Centennial.

W&L was led by junior 125-pounder Ben Segal (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) and junior 197-pounder Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater), who each posted two victories on the day. Morse improved his overall record to 19-2 on the season.

Washington and Lee will return to action next Saturday as it competes in the Centennial Conference Championships at Gettysburg College with the action set to begin at 10:00 am.

 

W&L PLACES THIRD AT NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE INVITE (2/3)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team placed third out of eight teams at the Newport News Apprentice Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va.

Longwood won the invitational with 122 points, while W&L accumulated 60 points.

Junior 197-pounder Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) and freshman 184-pounder Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) led the Generals with second-place finishes.

Senior 149-pounder Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) and freshman Steve Saks (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) at 157, picked up third-place finishes.

Senior heavyweight John Sensing (Hockessin, Del./The Tatnall School), senior 174-pounder John Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills), and freshman 141-pounder Cory Little (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) all placed fourth in their respective events.

Washington and Lee (4-5-1, 1-3) will be in action again next Saturday as they travel to Reading, Pa., to compete in the Albright Quadrangular at 2:00 pm.

W&L DEFEATS SOUTHERN VIRGINIA, 26-15 (1/31)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team won 6-of-10 matches and defeated Southern Virginia, 26-15, on Wednesday evening in Lexington, Va.

The Generals (4-5-1) started the meet with consecutive pins by senior heavyweight John Sensing (Hockessin, Del./The Tatnall School) and junior 125-pounder Ben Segal (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) to take a 12-0 lead.

The Knights cut the lead to 12-9 after sophomore133-pounder John Polena (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) was pinned by Jesse Mortensen and Gary Mortensen defeated freshman 141-pounder Cory Little (Charlotte, N.C./Independence), 13-8.

Senior 149-pounder Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) defeated John McHenove, 18-3, and freshman Steve Saks (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) defeated Arron Jaynes, 4-2, at 157.

So. Virginia fought with victories by Hadyn Call over W&L's 165-pound senior Greg Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills), 6-1, and Chrs Burton, who defeated junior Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick), 10-5.

W&L clinched the win with victories by senior 184-pounder John Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) and junior Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) at 197. Morse now stands at 15-1 on the season.

Washington and Lee will travel to Newport News, Va., on Saturday to compete in the Newport News Apprentice Invitational. The invite is set to begin at 8:00 am.

 

W&L DROPS TWO CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE MATCHES (1/27)

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Washington and Lee dropped two Centennial Conference matches on Saturday morning in the Ursinus Quadrangular in Collegeville, Pa. The Generals lost to host Ursinus, 32-9, before falling to Western Maryland, 34-9.

Against Ursinus, the Generals were led by junior 197-pounder Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater), who picked up his 14th victory of the year, 3-0. Sophomore 133-pounder John Polena (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and freshman 157-pounder Steve Saks (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) also picked up wins for W&L (3-5-1, 1-3).

In the loss to Western Maryland, freshman Cory Little (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) garnered six of his team's nine points with a pin at 0:53. Senior tri-captain John Sensing (Hockessin, Del./The Tatnall School) was the only other General to pick up a win in the match.

W&L will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 31, as it travel to Buena Vista, Va., to take on Southern Virginia at 7:30 pm.

 

W&L HOSTS W&L INVITATIONAL (1/20)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee placed sixth out of eight teams with 41 points in the 24th annual W&L Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va. Division I Davidson captured the title with 76 points.

Davidson was followed by Pensacola Christian (58.5 pts.), Washington and Jefferson (56.5 pts.) and Cumberland (55 pts.).

Washington and Lee was led by senior 149-pounder Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin), who placed second at 149. He defeated W&J's Chris Day, 7-5, and Anthony Albert of Davidson, 3-0. Scranton's Anthony Politi defeated Chamberlain in the championship match, 16-6.

Seniors Greg Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) and John Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) placed third at 165 and 184, respectively. Heavyweight John Sensing (Hockessin, Del./The Tatnall School) also finished third after a 2-1 victory over Shawn Reynolds of Davidson.

GENERALS FALL TO MUHLENBERG, 26-13 (1/10)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee dropped its first conference match to Muhlenberg, 26-13, on Wednesday evening in Centennial wrestling action in Lexington, Va.

The Generals won four matches on the day and were led by junior 197-pounder Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater), who picked up four points for W&L with his 14-5 decision over Muhlenberg senior John Slokovitz (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem). The win improved Morse to a perfect 10-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Centennial.

Junior 125-pounder Ben Segal (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin), senior 165-pounder Greg Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) and freshman Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) at 184 also won their respective matches.

W&L WRESTLING FINISHES SEVENTH AT SCRANTON INVITATIONAL (12/2)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- W&L junior Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) won his second consecutive title in the 197-pound weight class as Washington and Lee competed in the Scranton Invitatational on Saturday afternoon in Scranton, Pa. Washington and Lee placed seventh in the nine-team tournament with 48.5 points.

Morse finished the day with a 3-0 record and took home the championship with a 3-2 decision over Elizabethtown's Art Mattes.

Freshman Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) defeated Chris Lenhart of Baptist Bible to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 184-pound weight class before falling to eventual champion Jason Schlingman of King's College.

Olivet College (Mich.) took home the team championship with 122.5 points.

W&L returns to action on Jan. 6, as it will host the W&L Quadrangular at 11:00 am.

W&L WRESTLING COMPETES IN VMI INVITATIONAL (11/12)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- W&L junior Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) took the championship of the 197-pound weight class at the VMI Keydet Wrestling Invitational on Sunday in Lexington.

Morse began the day with an 8-3 win over J.D. Patton of Virginia. He then defeated Josh Ward of Christopher Newport, 1-0, in the semifinals and Tom O'Neill, also of CNU, 2-1, in the finals.

Senior Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) took home a third place finish in the 149-pound weight class. Chamberlain defeated Zac Howland of Old Dominion by a 10-2 count in the opening round before suffering a 6-2 loss to Micah Morris of George Mason in the second round. Chamberlain then downed teammate Josh Rogers (15-0), Matt Southhard of Duke (15-3), Mike Farnsworth of Longwood (18-1) and Brian Larimer of Christopher Newport (9-8) to win the consolation bracket.
