W&L Wrestling Splits with Gettysburg and McDaniel

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team split a pair of Centennial Conference matches on Saturday at Doremus Gym, falling in a tiebreaker (19-18) to Gettysburg and defeating McDaniel, 28-19.

With the split, W&L improved to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the Centennial Conference.  The eight wins matches the Generals' total from all of last season with three more dual matches remaining on the schedule.

The Blue & White nearly scored a ninth victory, falling 19-18 against Gettysburg via the tiebreaker.  The match was squared 18-18, but Gettysburg was awarded the winning point after the second tiebreaker rule.  The first is total number of matches won.  Both teams won five individual matches.  The second was total number of pins, with the Bullets claiming the only pin in the match.

The Generals built an 18-9 lead with two matches remaining following a technical fall victory (16-0) by senior Brandon Lefore (Morgan Hill, Calif. / Ann Sobrato) at 174 pounds and a 3-1 win by sophomore Rexx Hallyburton (Bishop, Ga. / Oconee County) at 184 pounds.  However, first-year Zach England (Bellevue, Wash. / Bellevue) suffered a pin in 4:59 at 197 pounds and senior Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) lost 4-1 to two-time National Qualifier Paul Triandafilou at 285 pounds to force the tiebreaker scenario.

W&L bounced back with a solid 28-19 win over McDaniel in the nightcap.  After falling behind 7-0 by virtue of a pair of opening losses at 125 and 133 pounds, the Generals went on to win the next five matches to assume a 25-7 lead entering the 184-pound weight class.

Junior Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) got things started with a 17-1 technical fall victory at 141 pounds, while first-year Bryce Crew (St. Mary's, Ga. / Camden County) and sophomore Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) followed with a pair of pins at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively.  Sophomore Alec Horne (Chester Springs, Pa. / Downingtown East) produced a 6-2 decision at 165 pounds and Lefore notched a 17-1 technical fall win at 174 pounds.  Senior Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) capped the day with a 3-2 win over Brendan Woody at 285 pounds.

Bylykbashi, Conners and Lefore all finished 2-0 on the day to lead W&L.

Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it travels to McDaniel for matches with the Merchant Marine Academy and Stevens beginning at 12:00 pm.
