LaCROSSE, Wis. – The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) released its 2017 Scholar All-America individuals and All-Academic teams at the NCAA Division III Championships and Washington and Lee was among the schools recognized.
The Generals garnered NWCA Academic Team laurels with the 26th-best team grade-point average (GPA). Case Western Reserve led the 31-team Division III All-Academic list with a 3.48 combined team GPA. W&L posted a 3.16 combined team GPA to earn the team award for the second straight season.
Individually, junior Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) and first-year Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) were among the 173 Division III wrestlers to receive Scholar All-America accolades. This marked the fourth straight season that W&L received multiple Scholar All-Americans citations. Kaminer was honored for the second time in his career after receiving the award as a rookie in 2015. This is the first Scholar All-America honor for Conners.
Kaminer completed his junior campaign with a 19-15 overall record at 285 pounds. He earned Honorable Mention All-Centennial Conference honors after placing second at the Centennial Conference Championship. He also placed sixth in the NCAA East Region at the same weight class. For his career, the journalism major has notched a 51-35 overall record.
Conners finished a stellar rookie campaign at 157 pounds with a 24-12 overall record. He finished fourth in the Centennial Conference and won a pair of matches in the NCAA East Regional.
To qualify for the NWCA Scholar All-America team, a wrestler must have a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) and one of the following: Be a national qualifier with a winning record, a regional place-winner with a winning record or have a season winning percentage of 67.0 percent or better. They must also have competed in at least 50 percent of the team's matches.
