W&L's Bylykbashi and Scott Compete at NCAA National Championship

LaCROSSE, Wis. – Washington and Lee sophomore Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) and first-year Joe Scott (Efland, N.C. / Orange) competed in the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship on Friday in LaCrosse, Wis.

Bylykbashi finished 2-2 in the 133-pound weight class, while Scott went 0-2 in the 165-pound weight class.

Bylykbashi dropped his opening match to Jared Braun of Elmhurst by a score of 11-6.  He then recovered to defeat eighth-seeded Joe Brodman of Wisconsin-Whitewater by a score of 2-1 in the consolation bracket.  His next match was a 9-6 victory over Evan Corso of Oswego State, but his tournament ended one win shy of placing and earning All-America honors with a 10-4 setback against seventh-seeded Cam Timok of Central (Iowa).  He finished his sophomore campaign with a 26-6 overall record.  Through two seasons, Bylykbashi owns a 60-16 overall mark.

Scott began the tournament against fourth-seeded Larry Cannon of Messiah.  He prevented Cannon from recording a takedown, but Cannon notched four back points after Scott chose bottom to begin one of the periods and then Scott rode the advantage to a 5-1 victory.  His day ended with a 9-2 loss to fifth-seeded Connor Brummett of Wabash in the consolation round.  Scott completed his rookie season with a 20-9 overall record.

Washington and Lee has now completed a tremendous 2016-17 campaign.  The Generals went 8-7 overall and finished fourth at the Centennial Conference Championship, it's highest-ever team placing.  W&L also qualified two wrestlers to Nationals for the first time in 30 years.
