ROCKY MOUNT, Va. – First-year Joe Scott (Efland, N.C. / Orange) won the 165-pound weight class to lead the Washington and Lee wrestling team to a 10th-place finish out of 19 teams at the NCAA East Regional hosted by Ferrum College at Franklin County High School on Saturday.
The Generals tallied 49.5 points, while Ferrum took the team title with 135.5 points. NYU was second with 106.5 points and Stevens Tech took third with 104.5 points.
Both Scott and sophomore 133-pounder Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) qualified for the NCAA National Championship. Bylykbashi placed third in his weight class, giving W&L two National qualifiers for the first time since Rich Redfoot and Steve Castle qualified in 1987.
On Sunday, Scott recorded a win by fall (5:48) over Maykel Dolorit of NYU in the semifinals. He then posted a 7-4 decision over Nick Herring of The College of New Jersey in the title match. Herring came into the match ranked ninth in the latest Division III rankings at 165 pounds.
In the semis, Bylykbashi dropped a 9-5 decision to second-ranked Nathan Pike of NYU after leading for a majority of the match. Pike was the runner-up in the 133-pound weight class at the 2016 Division III National Championship. Bylykbashi recovered to notch a 4-1 win over Noah Malamut of Gettysburg in the consolation semifinals, and then he recorded a 15-7 major decision over Dylan Luciano of Centenary (N.J.) in the third-place match to earn his berth to Nationals.
Junior Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) placed sixth overall at 285 pounds. He began his day with a pin (3:23) over Kyle Cocozza from The College of New Jersey, but then dropped a tight 2-1 decision to Victor Raigoza of the Merchant Marines in the consolation semifinals. He then suffered a 5-1 loss to Matan Peleg of Ursinus in the fifth-place match.
Scott and Bylykbashi will now compete in the NCAA National Championships, which will be held on March 10-11 in Lacrosse, Wis. Action will begin at 11:00 am on each day.
