BALTIMORE, Md. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team jumped out to a 29-0 lead en route to producing a 29-18 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday at Johns Hopkins.
The win improved W&L to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference. It was also the Generals' first win over the Mariner's (2-5, 0-1) since the 2005-2006 season.
W&L got on the board with a forfeit win by sophomore Ethan Hartman (River Edge, N.J. / River Dell Regional) at 125 pounds and sophomore Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) followed with a 13-4 major decision over Tyler Craig at 133 pounds. Sophomore Michael Dik (Boxford, Mass. / St. John's Prep) and junior Zachary Papin (Carrollton, Texas / St. Mark's) then produced consecutive pins at 141 and 149 pounds. Dik felled Nathan Hinkle in 4:57 and Papin pinned Frank Jilling in 4:32.
First-year Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) made it 26-0 W&L with a 16-4 major decision over Erik Beshada at 157 pounds and first-year Joe Scott (Efland, N.C. / Orange) gave the Generals a 29-0 lead with a 5-2 decision over Joshua Glantzman at 165 pounds.
The Merchant Marines posted wins at the final four weight classes, but it wasn't enough to overtake the Generals.
Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Ursinus for dual matches against the host Bears and Muhlenberg. Action begins at 12:00 pm.
