DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team dropped a 23-12 decision to Division I Davidson on Friday evening at Belk Arena.
The Generals (0-2) hung tough with the Wildcats (3-1), dropping four individual matches by two points or less.
W&L jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two weight classes, as sophomore 125-pounder Ethan Hartman (River Edge, N.J. / River Dell Regional) picked up a win by injury and classmate Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) posted a 3-2 win over Dustin Runzo.
The Generals would drop the next four matches, one by one point and two by two points, including a 9-7 overtime loss by first-year Joe Scott (Efland, N.C. / Orange) against Noah Satterfield at 165 pounds.
W&L first-year Alec Horne (Chester Springs, Pa. / Downingtown East) took down Conor Fenn by a score of 5-2 at 174 pounds to pull the Generals within 13-12, but a narrow 3-2 loss by first-year Rexx Hallyburton (Bishop, Ga. / Oconee County) at 184 pounds and a 9-1 loss by first-year Iszak Morgan (Portage, Ind. / Portage) put the match out of reach in favor of the Wildcats.
Washington and Lee will be back in action Saturday morning, as it participates in the Star City Open held at the Hotel Roanoke.
