W&L Wrestling Claims Three Place-winners at the ONU Invitational

ADA, Ohio – The Washington and Lee wrestling team claimed three place-winners and finished 12th of 15 teams at the Ohio Northern Invitational on Saturday.

Leading the way was senior Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School), who went 3-1 overall to finish in second-place in the 184-pound weight class.  In the process, he moved to 14-1 on the season and is now just five wins away from overtaking Ray Gross '80 for the most wins in program history.  Tassoni is 78-27 overall for his career.

Tassoni opened with a pin of Trine's Jon Blanton and then he notched identical 5-3 wins over Ohio Northern's Ian Brown and Olivet's Rodney Harvey to advance to the title match.  In the championship, Campbellsville's Chuck Sharon saddled Tassoni with his first loss of the season, pinning him in 2:03.

First-year Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) placed third in the 133-pound weight class, while sophomore Brandon Lefore (Morgan Hill, Calif. / Ann Sobrato) finished fourth in the 174-pound bracket.

Bylykbashi went 6-2 on the day to improve to 18-3 on the year.  Both losses on Saturday were to the same opponent as Waynesburg's Zach Swarrow won 8-4 in his second match of the day and then came back to pin Bylykbashi is 2:39 in the consolation bracket.  Bylykbashi recovered to post an 11-6 win over Austin Elred of Adrian in the third-place match.

Lefore went 4-2 overall and won each of his first three matches before falling to Travis Heller of Alma by a pin.  He then notched a 6-1 win over Myles Wright of Heidelberg, before dropping a 3-0 decision to Brandon Conrad of Lycoming in the third-place match.  Lefore is now 14-5 on the year.

Sophomore Michael Dik (Boxford, Mass. / St. John's Prep) also produced a winning record at the event, finishing 3-2 in the 141-pound weight class.  He is now 11-6 overall on the season.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Monday, December 21 when it hosts the W&L Duels.  The Generals will face Muskingum, Lycoming and Ohio Northern for matches starting at 10:00 am.
