Two Generals Earn All-Centennial Conference Honors
LANCASTER, Pa. – The Centennial Conference announced its 2014 all-conference wrestling team on Tuesday evening and Washington and Lee had two wrestlers honored.
Sophomore 174-pounder Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School) was selected to the first team, while first-year 197-pounder Bennett Lewis (St. Louis, Mo. / Westminster Christian) was named to the honorable mention squad.
Tassoni became W&L's first conference champion and first team all-conference honoree since 2001 when he won the 174-pound weight class at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. He went 3-0 overall and defeated Gettysburg senior Jared Leon in the finals by a score of 6-5 with a takedown in the final seconds.
Tassoni carries an 18-7 overall record and an eight-match winning streak into Sunday's NCAA East Regional held at King's (Pa.). The top three wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the NCAA Division III Championships to be held March 14-15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Lewis garnered honorable mention honors after recording a runner-up finish at the conference championships in the 197-pound weight class. He went 2-1 overall, losing to Ursinus junior Christian Psomas in the title match by fall (4:56). He will enter the regional with an 18-8 overall record.
McDaniel sophomore 133-pounder Ryan O'Boyle was named the conference's Wrestler of the Year, while Ursinus 149-pounder Derek Arnold was selected as the Rookie of the Year. Ursinus also claimed the Coach of the Year, with the title going to Bill Racich after he led the Bears to the 2014 league crown.
As a team, Washington and Lee finished sixth out of nine teams at the Centennial Championship, its highest finish in the event since 2010.
