W&L Wrestling Hosts NYU and Johns Hopkins

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team suffered a pair of defeats on Saturday in a tri-match with NYU and Johns Hopkins held at Doremus Gym.

The Generals dropped a 36-7 decision to NYU in their opening match, then fell to Hopkins, 38-6, in the nightcap.

W&L jumped out to a 7-3 lead against the Violets (11-1, 4-0), only to see NYU claim victory in the final seven matches.  Junior Dan Igel (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. / Bolles School) posted a 17-5 major decision over NYU first-year Dylan Lojac (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) at 157 pounds to give the Generals a 4-0 lead.  After a loss at 165 pounds, first-year Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School) made it 7-3 when he notched a 6-5 win over junior Doug Tomlinson (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) at 174 pounds.  However, W&L would drop the next two matches before forfeiting at 125, 133 and 141 pounds as the Violets pulled away for the win.

Against Johns Hopkins (3-9, 1-1), W&L opened a 6-0 lead when Igel logged a 6-3 win over sophomore Christian Salera (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) at 157 pounds and first-year Zac Richey (Swoope, Va. / Buffalo Gap) posted a 6-4 overtime win over sophomore Welles Sakmar (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) at 165 pounds.  The Generals then dropped a pair of narrow decisions at the next two weight classes before the Blue Jays seized control beginning at 285 pounds.

Washington and Lee will look for its first dual match win of the season on February 9 when it travels to Gettysburg College to take on the host Bullets, Stevens and Messiah.  Action begins at 12:00 pm.
