GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Junior David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) has advanced to the championship semifinals of the 165-pound bracket at the Messiah Petrofes Wrestling Invitational held at Messiah College on Friday evening.
Dennis, the fourth-seed, began his day with an 8-2 victory over Chris Warren of Ursinus. He then pinned Joe Wassel of Muhlenberg (4:43) and defeated the fifth-seed, Eric Levenseller of Johns Hopkins, 6-2. Dennis will face top-seeded Matt Cross of Johns Hopkins in the semifinals.
Senior 157-pounded Keith Jaworski (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) will also continue wrestling on Saturday as he has advanced to the semifinals of the consolation bracket. Jaworski advanced in the first round of the championship bracket with a bye, then knocked off Jonathan Sternlicht of Muhlenberg, 6-3, before falling to fifth-seeded Shane Everett of Wilkes, 3-1. Jaworski finished his day with a 2-1 decision over Steve Ciaccio of Bridgewater State in the consolation bracket. His Saturday action will begin with a match against eighth-seeded Josh Cintron of Mount Union.
As a team, the Generals are 12th out of 13 teams following the first day of competition. Wilkes is in first with 93.5 points, followed by Springfield in second with 89.0 points. Mount Union is third with 87.5 points and is followed by Messiah (84), Bridgewater State (58), McDaniel (57), Lycoming (55.5), Ursinus (53.5), Johns Hopkins (52.5), SUNY-Oneonta (49.5), Gettysburg (32.5), W&L (24) and Muhlenberg (20).
Saturday's final day action begins at 9:00 am.
