W&L Wrestling Knocked Off by Builders, 36-9

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team could not overcome four losses by forfeit in falling to the Apprentice School by a score of 36-9 on Saturday afternoon.

Following a forfeit at 125 pounds and an uncontested match at 133 pounds, the Generals (2-9) got on the board when first-year Eric Fessel (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) knocked off junior Marcus Chevres by a score of 10-9 at 141 pounds to make it 6-3 in favor of the Builders (17-8).

Junior Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) tied the score at 6-6 with a 4-1 decision over sophomore Odis Wesby at 149 pounds, but consecutive pins at 157 and 165 pounds gave Apprentice an 18-6 lead heading into the final contested match.

First-year Daniel Igel (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bolles School) recorded a 12-11 win over junior Anthony Damico at 174 pounds to make the team score 18-9 and the Builders notched forfeit wins at the final three weight classes for the final margin.

Washington and Lee returns to action on February 26 when it hosts the Centennial Conference Championships at 10:00 am.
